Colds and infants

My 6 month old grandson with cf has his 3rd cold and really struggles with nursing and a congested nose. Is there anything besides saline drops to use on his cold. I have heard that a decongestent isn't good for his cf, any help with this would be wonderful. Thanks

I would keep using saline and use the aspirator (aka nose sucker, lol) a couple of minutes after you put the saline in his nose. I would do the saline/nose sucker every hour or so to really clear him out. I would also prop him up in bed with a pillow under his mattress (if he sleeps in a crib) and run a vaporizer. There are varying thoughts on whether cool or warm vaporizors are best but personally I don't think it hurts to use either for a few days (just try to make sure nothing in his room is getting too damp bc bacteria could grow then). Also infant motrin might help decrease inflamation and help him sleep.

you could also try a warm bath, which will let the boogers flow before nursing. Or standing in a steamy shower as well.

DS had a lot of sinus issues until he was about 1 1/2. We used saline spray, the dreaded booger sucker. And I also would steam up the bathroom really good -- keep the door closed after DH would take one of his marathon showers and then I'd get a bath ready for DS. I'd give him baths in the morning and right before bed, which seemed to get the stuff moving.

We use simply saline -- compressed air (aerosol) spray instead of regular saline spray. Noticed a bit of a nasty backwash effect when I'd spray the regular stuff in his nose and figure it can't be good to have that stuff sitting in the bottle. Bleah!

We'd asked about nasal spray decongestants once, just to get him over a particularly nasty head cold and were told by his doctor absolutely not.

On a side note. Is the nasal mucus normal (clear) in color? Or is it yellow and looks like a sinus infection. We found that we were dealing with a nasty sinus infection that never quite went away. DS's doctor finally prescribed augmentin for 20 days to get rid of it

What's wrong with decongestants? I didn't realize there was a problem using those. I realize that we aren't supposed to use cough suppressants, but thought decongestants were ok. Please someone clear this up for me! Thanks--

I was told Guifenisen was fine with nothing else mixed into it which surpresses cough, but you could ask Dr first. We found an all natural herbal decongestant which was nice from Olga's brand (i think). I have used a bit of Vick Vapor Rub if he was really congested while he nursed and then saline after. I like to do a warm bath with lavender essential oil and/or a lavender foot rub before bed (while nursing).

Other than that it is just waiting it out and sleepless nights for mama and baby.

FYI: If you click on the link below there is a breastfeeding support site now available should she ever need it with resources, stories and other moms of CF babies. Just thought I'd pass it along.
