Colistin....E Flow???

OK so the doc prescribed me Colistin to replace TOBI, since my ear
started ringing really badly toward the end of my last cycle.
 So, I was talking to the lady who is getting everything ready
for me for the Colistin and she tells all about the E FLow and how
it is VERY fragile and HAS to be cleaned after every use with soap
and water, then disinfected at least once a week with alcohol.
 So, in actuality, because you have to be careful of
contaminating nebs with Cepacia, you have to boil the water first
then let it cool before you can disinfect it and you have to do
this twice a day?! How will I have time for a 10 hour a day
 job, exercise, therapy, 3-4 other neb treatments (done 2
times each per day). Oh man, does anyone have advice about
Colistin? Do you really have to clean it EVERY time you use it?<br>

well i know that cleaning the eFlow is important because the way it works is through thousands of tiny drilled holes. Meds stick to the holes. so if you don't clean the part with the drilled holes, the eFlow will become less efficient. so there's a method to the madness.

Yeah....I guess that makes sense. Sorry, I am just sorta
venting...I just hate how much time goes into all the meds.
Heh...we get to fight so hard to live, but then never really get
the time to <i>live</i>.

I have some tips on cleaning the eflow that have worked great for us.

1) Always, Always wash with warm soapy water immediately after each use. Rinse for at least 10 seconds under the tap.

2) Always disinfect in 70% isopropyl alcohol and rinse with boiled distilled water (boil for 10 minutes) prior to using. DO NOT boil the parts.

3) It is fairly difficult to keep the vibrating disk from getting clogged even with the above regimen. Prior to each use we would fill the neb cup with the boiled distilled water and run the machine for a couple of minutes to make sure that it was totally clear.

Nebs are fast if the machine is clean. 3 ml of solution in about 5 minutes.

We also noticed that nebulizing was faster with the AC adaptor than with batteries.

It may seem like it is a hassle to keep it clean, but once you get the hang of it, it should only take a few minutes to get it ready - aside from the disinfecting part.

In addition to the cleaning part with the neb....Colistin tends to get foamy which seems to drag out the administering of it. I have found that if I premix a days worth & keep it in the fridge that the coolness helps to minimize the frothiness. Just a thought in addition to what others have said about the neb cleaning.

Tom you disinfect with alcohol every time you use it? And don't you
have to use it after it's completely air dried? How do you run
water through it first and still have it dry enough for the med.?
Also....you just wash it with regular unsterile water? Don't you
have to worry about contamination from Cepacia or something?
