Collapsed lung? can it be partially collapsed?

Julie, I hope Mark is doing okay...I would still let his doc know what happened so that he or she can decide whether or not to get him in for a Xray just to be on the safe side. Of course if he is having problems with breathing, then emergency attention would be best.

I have heard of people getting pneumothoraxes (collapse their lungs) from lifting. That happened to a good friend of mine. He was tall and very thin- I think he had Marfan's...the docs that treated him said that males with his physique had higher rates of developing "blebs" on their lungs. Because he held his breath while lifting, one of his blebs popped and partially collapsed his lung. He was treated with a chest tube, ultimately surgery to remove the lobe because this kept recurring despite scarring the defect with talc. This is just an example...Mark could have pulled cartillage or muscle. (I am hoping it was that instead of a collapsed lung)

I will say one thing, I know you will be watching him like a hawk! BTW, how are those precious babies doing??

Thinking of both of you, Jenn

I've had more than one collapse and once you know what it feels like it is unmistakable. The first time I wasnt sure so I waited afew days before going to the hospital, it turned out it was a 40% collapse. If he still has pain he should at least let his doctor know and get X-rays.

Yes a lung can be partially colapsed. I would say he should get a chestg x-ray. The docs wanted to rule it out in me when I was having the horrible pleural pain two weeks ago. If you guys need anything let us know! Good luck.

He says he's feeling a lot better, but I'm still watching to see if he's just saying that to avoid all the "drama" (as he calls it). I do think he would tell me if he was still uncomfortable, but I'm looking out just to make sure.

He's thinking maybe it was just a strain to some chest muscles... let's hope that's it! I really really appreciate all the well wishes and help and sharing your stories. I've read all the responses to him and he says he appreciates it as well because he knows what feelings to look out for now and if something persisist that he needs to go in. So thanks for the "education" for both of us from all of you!!!

His next clinic visit is due in March, but I have a call into the CF nurse to see if we can move it sometime in February, sooner the better.

As some others said,
GO to the doctor!!!! I know he wants to avoid the drama, believe me, I understand. But there will be worse drama if this is a collapsed lung or partial col, or a blood vessel or small airway has popped in there.
When I was young-the same thing happened. I was at home doing stuff and I felt a pop, sinking type feeling in my lung. They called the doc and they said call an ambulance which they did. I killed for about 6 hours, but then it got better. The ER sent me home.
A week later, the pain returned, I started coughing up blood and had a massive infection. I went to the cf hosp this time (in philly) and I popped a small airway. I was in the hosp for a month.
Maybe this isn't what happened to Mark, maybe its nothing at all like this. But I'd rather know and treat it sooner than later.

Juie:

I hope Mark is doing OK, I know my 5 yr old son with cf had a partially collapsed lung (lower left lobe) at the age of 3. They put him in the hospital for a clean-out. I had always thought that since that it may be a common thing with cfer's.

Hope all is well.
