I think its not a matter of CF but a matter of personal choices. If you think you should rest or sleep go ahead and do it. Stick to that. No matter what everybody else thinks. If you think youre having a great time, enjoy it even if you have to stay up for 30 more minutes doing a treatment. If youre having a nice time, stay up late on a Saturday, dont feel guilty about it. Dont feel guilty about skipping one treatment if you did all the treatments of the week perfectly and on time. Thats my theory!
Ive been a freshman too and the first semester is kind of hard because you have to learn how to manage your time and be responsible for your health all by yourself. It gets better. But apart from CF everyone has different schedules and ideas about fun. Its not a shame wanting to go to sleep. Support your wants and needs. People are different and you cant always agree on everything. Accept others as they are. Accept yourself as you are and have fun anyways. Dont try to fit in. Theres no such thing .

Oh I feel for you! College is such a new and exciting experience and I know I always wanted to be involved and do what everyone else was doing. But I feel for ya cause it is hard to be strong and independent and deal with CF and its limitations and still feel like "one of the gang." Being able to walk away and do what you have to do to keep yourself healthy takes alot of guts, motivation, perseverance and courage. I know you can do it. As an adult it is easier to look back and say who cares what others think, do what you need to do. But when you are a frosh in college it is hard to have that perspective. But I can tell you if you maintain your health you will be able to do more. Those who understand your limitations are the ones who you REALLY want in your life. I would say try to do your treatments before going out. That helped me alot. And explain to people that CF is a lung disease that causes your mucus to be like cement. That mucus then is a breading ground for infections. These infections lead to lung damage and death. That is pretty to the point with out being too elaborate unless they ask. Tell them you are an open book and open to questions that they might have about CF so ask away tell them. Tell them having CF is like when you have a really bad chest cold and are coughing alot. Everyone has experienced that and sometimes they can get a better picture in their head cause they remember what it felt like when they had their bad chest cold. In my experience those who are more open and casual about CF tend to have people rally around them that "get it". But for sure you will meet people who do not "get it" and those are the ones you just do not need in your life. Stay strong and true to yourself. In the long run it will be worth it health wise and mentally for you to persevere through all the hard times.
You can do this! Feel free to PM me if you want to talk more....
part of your problem is explaining to people why you need to leave gatherings, from what i understood. so maybe you shouldn't make a big deal out of it. i mean, i'm having a hard time imagining why anyone would nag you to stay and hang out if you say you've got something to do really quick and that you'll be back shortly. personally, i think it would be easier if you explained simply that you have to do breathing treatments everyday; and other than that, just do what you gotta do. if your friends will be up late anyway, and you're not tired you can join them after you do your treatment. or, as some others suggested, do treatment before going out so you can stay out late worry-free, without leaving the party early.
you said sometimes your friends "sacrifice their time" by walking you to your dorm, but i hardly believe it's a sacrifice. if they didn't really want to, they likely wouldn't walk you back. and don't feel guilty. enjoy that walk together; make the best of it. definitely don't feel guilty about doing your treatments and medications, because that adds to all the time you'll have to spend with good friends

Thanks for all the great advice everyone. It has been very encouraging to know that a lot of others have gone through the same thing. I will definitely be looking for opportunities to do treatments at other times and see what works best for me. Also, thank you for sugggesting the "I have cf so what" blog. I have already ready so many of her entries. I cant stop reading them because theyre so good. She has a great attitude about cf and isnt afraid to tell everyone about it. Very encouraging and inspirational.

I have asked my daughter to contact you, she is a freshman in college and having struggles with balancing her life as well. Peer pressure is not the biggest problem because she does what she needs to do for her and has learned her friends will never truly know what she has to deal with on a daily basis. Her name is Bianca Reyes. I hope you can be friends and help each other thru the stress of college. Her email is biancareyes1345@yahoo.com if you would like to email her. She is also on facebook all the time and you can friend her under he name above. Hope you don't get discouraged too much, just remember your health is your #1 priority so that you can enjoy your life to its fullest!
