Computer question

mom2lillian (Nicole) has a good point, I wasn't sure if DVD-R disks were available in the States, yet!

However, you do need a burner software program to mount your data onto the DVD-R. The disk is primarily for movie data, but should offer an option to store data files.
Normally, any burning of DVD-R/RW, or CD-R/RW requires a program to burn it. If your computer has XP, then adding a flash-ram USB would have the drivers so plug-n-play would be easy, and it'd be great to use for important data, but beware-that thing is small enough to be dropped and/or lost. I had one, which I lost one time, it had important data, which I fortunately encripted, but I'm sure the new 'finder' ended up erasing my data to use it for themselves.
If you happen to be SOL with Nicole's suggestion, do they happen to sell HDD drives that connect by USB, or do they have MO drives? The MO drive is about 700MB, similar to the volume for a CD, but more compact in size.

And, yes, when your computer gets acting funky, and if you tried putting in a disk to correct the problem without having to reformat, but it didn't correct the problem, then you will need to reformat! Your E-mail data SHOULD be able to be exported onto another memory device, to be imported when your computer is back on-line. I often have my 'favorites' on a memory stick so I don't have to re-enter all that info when I'm reformatting, or getting a new computer.
Also, if you have wireless security, make sure you have all the info you need to re-install that, I'm sure that data goes when the computer is reformatted.

Hey, Nicole, great idea, I wonder if I can sell myself to backup everyone's stuff, or do a little "In-house Networking". Maybe that'll be something I can do when I return to the States. Already, I'm afraid I may have to do all that reformatting to my computer AGAIN, and have to make a lot of backup disks, first!

There are a few ways to do but first, is you CD drive also a CD Burner, might say CD-RW drive or DVD-RW (most computers that are less than 5yrs old have them standard now). If so, you can use a burner software like Roxio (cost to purchase unless already on ur system) or DeepBurner (free online at www.download.com). Insert a blank CD-RW into you CD Rom drive (most CD-RW drives have a window to popup after inserting a blank disc that ask you what type of operation would you like to perform: open, nothing, burn) After you do that, open your burner software, whatever you choose to use. It will ask you what kind of CD you would like to make. You will want to make a Data Disc (Audio Disc would be when you want to burn mp3s to a CD to play in the car). Then you will select the files that you want to burn and the burn to the disk.

You can also put in a blank CD-RW, open the CD Rom into a separate window from the files you want to back up. You can Click & Drag your files into the CD-Rom window and let them copy over (this can be time consuming). When it is full or close to full compacity, the you can select "Write These Files to Disk" and it will give you a Wizard to follow in order to write it on the disk.

There is another thing you can buy called a Flash Drive, aka Jump Drive (or Memory Stick as it was referred to above). They plug into your USB Port, however, they can be expensive. The more it holds, the more it cost. I got one that holds 525MB for $30. It wasnt near enough to backup my computer. I sat between two computers, going back and forth until I had it all moved over. Larger ones that hold up to 1GB or more can cost up to a $100 or more. All depends on the manufacture. I believe there is one on BestBuy.com for $19.99 by SanDisk (i have never used them) and it is 1GB. Go to ur local, BestBuy or Circuit City and they should be able to help you pick one out for your needs if you want to go this way.

Burning to CD is cheaper if you are able to do it by having a CD Burner. If not, memory stick is the way to go. Good luck

Sounds like Danyell has excellent detailed description of what to do, sorry to say I just know what my husband teaches me to do for my own purposes and what I pick up my accident

One thing - please dont waste your money at best buy and the like. Go to tigerdirect.com and they have things so so so much cheaper you dont have to have a business license but you can get things even cheaper (I think this is the site that offers that) if you do have one. I just looked and there are 2GB sticks which will hold alot of info for 20-30 bucks.

Fred-Yes it is a very nice side business if you can get into it, my Dh does alot of adware virus data recovery networking and buying and setting up new computers for people. DH is a microsoft engineer and A+ yada yada, he does computers at work and just by chance people started asking him to come to their houses. We just did it casual word mouth previously now we just took out our first add starting this week and he is giving our second small business client a quote tonight for some work they want done and it will be over $400 profit for one evening! It is starting to get exciting for us. Where are you located now?

This is quite scary...me trying to give computer advice, but have you tried the following, Jennifer:

***edited to delete my bright idea. It didn't work on my computer & from looking at Jennifer's blog, it looks like it's too late for her to try it anyway.
