So i've been in the hospital since 07-25 and i'm doing the vest and atrovent treatments every 4 hours along with pulmozyne 1 a day and hypertonic saline 2 times a day. The Dr. I saw this moring said that I had plugs in 3 of my lobs so my question is shouldn't I be able to move them after 3 days of treatment. I still haven't been able to cough anything up and it's a little frustrating maybe the treatments aren't working. Is anyone familiar with moving plugs and generally how long it takes to move them? Is it possible that mucus can be to thick to move?

Hello,

I know for me when I get mucus plugs it can take me up to 4 weeks on IVs and all my other treatments Xopenex every 4 hours,Pulmozyme 1 time a day plus my vest 3 times a day. I have also had to have a broncoscope(sp?) to also remove the plugs. Sometimes the mucus is so thick and dry or it can get lodged and just won't move. I hope this helps you. Just keep fighting them and hopefully the plugs will move on out.

Plugs can be stubborn. Are you getting extra fluids? I often ask for continuous iv's in between meds to help loosen things up. In addition I am able to get massage. Sometimes it just takes time. It depends on how long they have been there.

For me I guess it varies, I have had some really bad ones that require very aggressive therapy with IV's, the nebs, CPT whatever will do the trick short of standing on my head! The smaller ones come out easier and much sooner than those stubborn huge ones. I will venture a guess, for the big ones it can take up to a few weeks, the smaller ones, just days. I pray that those plugs come up soon, I know that they are uncomfortable. Hugs, Jenn <img src="i/expressions/heart.gif" border="0">
