Congestion in an Infant

Anyone that has read my previous post knows that I am military stationed overseas and having trouble getting medical care for my son who is almost 4 months old. His newborn screening was positive but 2 sweat test were inconclusive. The good news is that we have an apt at Water Reed in two weeks. My concern is that the congestion that he has had since birth is getting worse, to the point that he is chocking on it in his sleep and it is waking him up. Im still at the point of not knowing if this is a sign of CF or if this is the local crud going around. Any advice?

How is his breathing (fast or normal) Have you been taught CPT (chest percussion therapy) yet? Is he on albuterol or xopenex? We also use saline nose spray everyday to rinse out our little one's nose (You could do this without a diagnosis). We started all of this when DD was two months old (when she was diagnosed) but I know several little ones who were diagnosed at birth started immediately. Just some thoughts

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE,push for dx and tx! I can't stress this enough to you. My son ended up in the hospital on oxygen at night b/c I let sleeping dogs lie when I was told my son simply had a cold...FOR 6 MONTHS!!!!He is now getting proper tx, but I think about all the wasted time in hospital, and on sleep, when a proactive choice by me could have saved all that. Keep in touch and let us know how things go at Reed.

Has he been tested for RSV -- nasty virus with lots of snot, rapid breathing that can be difficult for any baby, not just cfers.

When DS would get congested, we'd increase chest physiotherapy, give him a bath in the morning and evening after steaming up the bathroom. We'd also use saline drops followed with the bulb syringe to suck out the nasal secretions.
