Constipation anyone???

I know that chronic diaharria(sp???) is common in CF, but what about severe and chronic constipation? Does anyone have this equally annoying problem? I guess I am pancreatic sufficient as I do not require taking anything for digestion, but still have this problem.

DS has had problems with this. When he was a few months old he would still have loose stools, but according to xrays, had a lot of stool backed up in the large intestine. Think it's called Meconium Equivilant.

Some people just get a feeling and use Milk of Mag. Others have more difficult problems and are prescribed miralax. Sometimes other measures need to be taken. A friend of mine's granddaughter when diagnosed never had issues with loose frequent stools, but did with constipation.

My son who has cf has a constant problem with constipation. The doctors have had him on and off mirlax since Jan of this year. He has never had to work about the diaharria. Every time we go to the doctor they put him back on it because they feel his bowels blocked up. As a matter of fact in July they thought he was having a gallbladder problem and it turned out to be his bowels were blocked up. I don't know why he keeps having these problems. He does take enzymes and lots of other medicine.

I also take enzymes and have as of last had problems with constipation. My doc said it is very common. I just don't know the reason for it.

I ask if I need to change my dose and the doc said no. That is what I thought it was from. I think it has to do with too much mucus but I am not sure.

We asked about decreasing enzymes, too when DS was having constipation issues. Doctor also said no. DS was born with a blockage due to meconium illeus -- too much mucus bogged down the intestines. He felt that when DS was younger -- the loose stool/constipation combo was more of a meconium equivilant -- too much stool backed up in the colon. Sometimes DS just needs a little assistance getting things moved along again. L
