Constipation in Toddler

When my daughter had hard poops that made her strain, sometimes for up to half an hour at a time, we saw a gastroenterologist. Lactulose was prescribed and it seemed to really help. We've never used Miralax, so I don't know what the difference is, if any. My understanding is that Lactulose hydrates the bowels a bit to help move things along in there. We gave it daily for a while then cut back and now I just keep it on hand in case we need it again.

I hope you find something to ease her discomfort. I know how hard it is to watch your child strain like that.

I had to mix it with a small amount of coke and called it his "coca cola medicine" and he would take it that way. I hope things clear up for your daughter and this is just a phase. Thanks for all the replies. I just talked with the clinic and they want her back on the Miralax. They said to stay on it for at least a couple weeks and then we'll try to wean her off. It is just so strange because she is usually very regular and now this! Now my trouble is getting my toddler to drink the stuff! Melissa, you are so right. Just when things seem to be getting pretty normal something new comes along and throws you for a loop! Thanks for all the support. Hopefully, Kate will drink this stuff and we'll get her feeling better!

Hi Zoe, our daughter drinks the miralax in juice and doesn't know it's there. She's been on it daily for a while. Her chronic constipation was so horrible. Poor thing, so miralax is just part of our daily routine. A change of enzymes, tons of prunes and juice, flax seed oil, nothing worked except miralax. And now it's over the counter, so no need to worry with a prescription.
