Constipation

Thank you for clearing that up, Aleksandra. I'll be sure to push the water!!

I'd ask about starting to use miralax daily as well. My son has severe gastric emptying and it causes a LOT of constipation. We also have him on amitiza, a med that's supposed to help pull more water into the intestines to help move things along.

MANY people with CF have constipation and slow digestion. It's VERY common for children with CF to have to deal with this. We've had issues as the GI doctors say it's caused by CF and they can't help, then the CF doctors say it's NOT CF and it's a GI issue....back and forth until my son ended up with serious issues and his GI tract shut down almost entirely before we could get him admitted and for both teams to work together.

More water doesn't always take care of things. I'd say yes to probiotics, ask about amitiza, ask about miralax and bug those doctors until you get some answers. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> Good luck! Most of the people with CF treated at our center take miralax once or twice a day just to stay regular.

Thank you, Christine! It's good to know that I'm not the only one struggling with the doctors. I have the same problem with the shuffling back and forth. We see the GI tomorrow and I'm going to PUSH to get the help we need. DS is currently on Miralax daily and it does help keep him regular. I'll bring up the Amitiza as well and see what we can do about that. I'm going to look into the probiotics too. Anything I can do to help him!

My daughter is pancreatic sufficient, her fecal elastase tests in the normal range and she does not take enzymes. She's always just a little constipated - her poop is always very firm, she seems to strain to poop, it hurts some (but not overwhelmingly), it's always neat little nuggets and never soft and messy. Is this something I should be concerned about? She also has very low appetite, is it possible that being mildly constipated makes her feel fuller? If she poops 5-6x a week, I shouldn't be putting her on miralax, right?

Sarah, it does sound like your daughter could be constipated. Even if she goes every day, it doesn't mean there isn't a lot of fecal matter left behind in her intestines. And, yes, if she's constipated that could effect her appetite. You should bring it up to your doctor and see if Miralax would be a good idea. If nothing else, it might make it more comfortable for her to go.

Sarahproctor, You might want to discuss a stool softner instead of a laxative with your doc. Sounds like your DD is regular, just needs to get a little bit more out and with less effort. Constant mild constipation can definitely make a kid feel full and decrease their appetite. Making sure she is hydrated is important too. My daughter (no CF) always had a problem with mild constipation as a baby/toddler if we didnt fluid load and fiber load (lots of fruits and veggies, high fiber carbos only). Avoid the BRAT diet too (its the kid diet to get rid of the runs, but it will constipate = bananas/rice/apple juice/toast).
