I definitely agree with the physio to keep active.

if you sit around the house and become a couch potato you will lose muscle tone and lung function and you will be less likely to bounce back from infection..

keep up the swimming its great for your lungs, Id also recommend introducing a weight training program. Weight training will help put on muscle which weighs more then fat and bones etc, and because its not cardio by rights you shouldnt loose weight...

thats my two cents worth...

He may have meant to eat like a couch potato -- high-fat content --, other than that I can't believe your dr would say such a stupid thing.

Speaking from experience I am a couch potato & I am that because Ithought it would be the best way to gain weight. Boy was I wrong. It just made my lungs get worse quicker & made my muscles waste away. Being active requires more of a caloric intake to make up for what you burn, but when its all said & done the muscle you build will add weight & your lung funciton will improve. Now if I can just figure out where to start for myself now that I gave you the advice!

What he said. And to those shocked that a doc would say such a thing...Remember people, doctors are just humans that went through medical school. There are many stupid humans out there. Add to that he might have partied too much in school and some other aspects, and frankly might not know much about CF, and there you go.

Definitely hit the weights and tone/beef up.

Staying active + weight training is the key to remaining healthy with CF. Biking, rollerblading, swiming, fast paced hiking, jogging, etc etc.

Definitely keep active I would say. My daughter's Consultant is also going on about being active, doing physio, etc, etc. He has never said otherwise.

Go 4 it I say.

Wow- stunned that your doctor would say that. Any chance the doc meant just to take it easy while you are recovering from a flare-up? That might make some sense, but otherwise I join with everyone else and urge you to stay active. Activity has definitely been a major factor in my longevity. Be well.

I presume you're talking about the registrar or SHO and not the consultant, which hosp are you in Brenco, Beau or Vins?

Hasn't anyone tried a balance of the two? >_>

I do my treatments/clearence, then I go running for 30-40 minutes, then I go back to sitting around being lazy.
Being able to relax the way I do is one of the main reason I can still function at all when I get infections ( I.E. I can still work through it with what I have, to keep makin the money, to keep payin the insurance).

I think I know the registrar you're talking about Brenco. I myself am in Vincents but have heard about this guy. My friend told his registrar (presumably the same guy) that oral ciproxan never worked for him, to which the registrar replied 'Have you been through six years of med school? Right, Im the doctor here.' What a prat. He said the same sot of thing to another girl I know (I believe it was 'Whos the doctor here, me or you?') and she has since changed over hosps.

I think that you can eat eat eat, and still be active. Just do some weight training to build up upper body muscles, and do some light cardio. That's what my doctors and physio agree on.

Hi Brenco,

I'm in vincents and the consultant there is always telling me to exercise more so do any physios I've spoken to. I can't believe a doctor would say that, it's crazy, just eat a high calorie diet for the weight. Being fit helps your lung function and helps you when you do get an infection. Good luck.

Do as much regular exercise as you can. I have been exercising consistently since high school and granted some days are better then others. I also do not exercise when I am sick so needless to say my workouts are up and down but they are consistent. I firmly believe this is what has allowed me to recoup after getting really sick! Yes my FEV1 has been decreasing as I get older and more exacerbations hit me but I am able to get back to my baseline and at 34years old my FEV1 is 68% so that is pretty good.

In a nutshell, keep movin'

I wish my doctor would say that. It would be wonderful if we could stay healthy by sitting on our butt all day. However that dont happen. I've been told to stay active by work, excercise, anything. I'll admit, I dont excercise like I should. My idea of excercise is playing phone tag (j/k) but when you exercise you turn fat into muscle and muscle weighs more than fat, so ultimately you will gain weight that way and keep your lungs healthy in the process.

As far as excercise, I was told to walk on a treadmill and do weight lifting.

Now, I just need to get motivated and follow the advice I just passed on to you.
