Cough attacks

Hi everyone,

Just wondering what all you people with CF do when you start into a cough attack at an inopportune time or when it's completely awkward. For example, you might be having a conversation with someone and then it hits and you can't finish your sentence for another 4 minutes until you can stop coughing. What do you do during that time? Do you ever say something funny afterwards? Okay, I know some of you guys are probably comedians out there. I'd really like to hear how some of you make the situation less awkward.

Thanks!

I got those all the time before I treated my allergies. My airways would spasm so much and I would go for days in a row of coughing so hard that I would throw up.

So after getting allergy tested, blah blah blah as you've seen me write a zillion times, that has happened a lot less.

On a rare occasion I will get a fit, so I keep breath mints in my purse. For some reason that calms things down. Also drinking something very very hot helps every time as well. Sometimes eating a few bites of food works. And finally, if (this happens maybe every 2 years) I really can't get on top of the cough, I take tessalon pearls (benzonatate). not my first choice, but it doesn't relax things.

hope that helps <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

It depends on the situation. My friends and family know that they can keep talking while I am coughing and I will still be listening. They might actually enjoy not having me interrupt them lol. Sometimes I will say something like, "oh, sorry, I forgot to breathe for a minute there!"

If I've been coughing a lot during a class and someone is giving me LOOKS OF DOOM, I might let them know that I'm not contagious, I wouldn't be in class if I was. Then I'll apologize for disturbing their concentration and most of the time they feel bad and don't give me any more problems.

Once, however, I was in my 8 am physics lecture (morning = coughing tons) and the two guys next to me were being really mean about it and telling me I should OMG SERIOUSLY GET SOME COUGH MEDICINE! I told them that I had lung cancer and managed right on cue to have two little tears slide down my cheeks. Awful, yes, but they shut up and never said anything to me ever again. Their looks were priceless though.

From the time I was a child, I found a method that helped me control my cough. I had to learn this to sit through a VERY QUIET Catholic Mass. I would swallow some air and kind of hold my breath a bit and stare or concentrate on something for a few seconds and it would go away. Now that is supressing a cough; but, there are times when you have to do that. I shared this with my doc recently and he said I am just doing a form of self-hypnosis. Training my body to do what I want it to do in the moment. After church then I could cough away in the car. I have never thought of anything very clever for a cough attack. As an adult, I usually just try to do my suppressing and then excuse myself to find a restroom nearby.
