There's a reason CFers aren't given cough suppressants. Coughing helps us keep the infectious/thick mucous in the lungs moving, which is very important. So unless you are coughing so much you can't function, I think cough suppressants are not a good idea.

we know this was just wondering what someone else did . Not with just medicine but to much coughing is not good either if you can not sleep, right. Just wondered if anyone had soggestions, besides call the doctor.

my doctor does allow a suppressant at night if i cant sleep, over the counter things work such at nyquil or robutussian...its not good to cough all night and not get the rest you need...now i stress this measure is when your couging more than usual and cant get to sleep because of cough...even if you cough at night it doesnt help anything because you are laying down it stays in the lungs and if it comes out you swallow it in your sleep, and sometimes if your sick to much mucus in your stomach will make you vomit ....yes at least its out of the lungs...but anyway if you cant sleep a suppressant should be ok for night time only, there are also expectorants that will help calm the cough i would try those first. it may take a little longer to work as it loosens it up and makes you cough more at first.

I wouldn't put too much faith in cough suppressants. I've had to use them in the past, and all they did was make my throat numb, I still kept coughing. The only thing that works for me is to prop myself up... or sleep in an easy chair. For some reason that seems to help, so if the suppressants don't work for you, try that. =-)

Whenever I need cough syrup for out of control coughing -- like when it gets to the point that I'm just tearing up my throat instead of actually bringing stuff up, or it's keeping me up all night, etc. -- I always get Tussin DM (Robitussin DM if you want the brand name), it has both a suppressant and an expectorant so it helps control the irritated coughing while also loosening up the mucous so coughs can be more productive. I was always told to get the DM specifically.

When doc's won't give is stuff to suppress the cough I feel it is more because most of these meds also dehydrate sections, EG pseudoephedrine or guaifenesin. I am not familair with OTC drugs I am unsure about all the different tussin productss. There are different types so get the one without the decongestant, I imagine that would be plain ol 'tussin. If you had a friend that is a doc maybe get a cough syrup with codiene or phenergan, that is what you really would want, suppress your cough all the while knocking you out.

There do exist cough syurps without supressants in them (or your pharmacist can specially formulate one for you) but they have an expectorant which helps get stuff up. But, as the previous posters have said, giving a CFer a syurp with a supresssant in it is NOT a good idea and any doctor I have ever met recommended against it.

I have twins with CF - when they are up couging all night I prop them up and give them soar throat spray - or losengers. Also, a neb 1 or 2 of cold broncial saline helps. I know it sounds like a lot more than just downing some syurup. But cough suppresent is not a good idea at all!!!
