cough

My daughter had a cold two weeks ago and she had the awful, wet cough with it. The cold and cough lasted about a week and then she got better. The cough had almost all but gone away when she started with a little, dry cough throughout the day. This cough is completely different than the cough she had with her cold. It's very inconsistent but she does cough several times a day.

We called her CF clinic and they said they could go ahead and start abx or she could come see the dr on Tuesday. I picked to wait and see the dr but now I'm wondering if we should go ahead with the abx. What does anyone else suggest? I don't want to wait too long if she needs abx.

The nurse also mentioned the cough i was describing sounded like an asthma cough. Does this sound right? Allie hasn't had any other symptoms of asthma but does this go hand in hand with CF??

Thanks
Amy
mom to Allie 3 w/CF and Betsy 1 no CF

My daughter is on a constant anti - bio as a preventative measure called Flucloxicilin....she developed a wet cough and the Drs changed her anti bio to something more strong that treats different things and it cleared up... she is now back on Fluclox.....

I just called my Dr about the same thing yesterday. Hailey has a cough but I can't tell if it is in her throat from nasal drainage or in her lungs. She sounds horrible. I am waiting for the clinic to call me back again today because they said if it got worse to call them back so they can call something in just to be safe. The clinic is like a 2.5 hour drive for us. It really sucks because they were just saying how well she was doing and we didn't have to come every 4 weeks she only has to come every 8. We will see what they say now.

Hi Amy,

What you're describing doesn't sound too serious. Many People with cf have "reactive airways", a condition where-- as in asthma-- the lungs over-react to irritation from environmental triggers. Colds are among the most common triggers. If that's what's happening, antibiotics won't help. The cough may gradually go down on its own, or Allie may need a brief course of inhaled corticosteroid to settle the twitchy airways. We had Jordan on inhaled corticosteroids for a while, and they did seem to reduce his cough. Unfortunately they also messed up his growth, so now we use other, maintenance strategies (Intal and a leukotriene inhibitor) to try to dampen the reactivity of his airways on a routine basis.

You also may want to have Allie's sinuses checked. It's really, really common for kids with cf to get sinus infections secondary to a cold. The cough that goes along with that is typically very dry, though it's not usually "little"; Jordan's tends to sound kind of barky when he has a sinus infection.

Whatever it is, we hope Allie gets over it soon.

Bambi,

Thanks so much. Allie had her visit today and her doctor seems to think it is just some sinus draining left over from her cold. Everything else looked great. I guess we'll see how her culture comes out at the end of the week. I really appreciate your reply <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Take care, Amy
