Coughing and Pregnancy

I just found out that I am pregnant and fear the baby(s) safety during some of my coughing spells.

Usually I cough most right when I get up until I walk my three miles and have a treatment. Can those women with cf tell me the following:

1) Did you have coughing spells when first finding out you were pregnant?

2) How did you handle it?

3) Can this harm the baby that you know of?

4) I feel some pulling sensation down there, not really cramping but just sore could this be from fetal distress from coughing?

I think I coughed more during my pregnancy than ever in my life - but it might just be that I was more aware of it because of the same things you are mentioning. I was assured numerous times by both my OB and Cf doc that coughing will not cause a miscarriage. Mild cramping is completely normal and can occur all throughout pregnancy as things move and stretch. I often made sure I stopped what I was doing and sat down when i had a coughing spell just to be sure not to strain my pelvic muscles, but whether or not that really mattered, I dunno - it made me feel better. As my pregnancy progressed I often peed my pants when i coughed and/or coughed until I puked - something to look forward too- lol, but both my kids made it through A-OK. good luck!

I coughed quite a bit during my pregnancy, but it didnt affect my daughter at all. I did the normal things that I do now. The feelings you have might be normal baby sensations. Your body is adjusting to a new life in it! Take good care of yourself & dont fear.....many moms who dont have CF get sick & have coughing spells!

I coughed constantly!! I was so afraid I would cough the baby right out!! But...I didn't and he is fine and he is the only baby I have ever interacted with that doesn't flinch at my loud CF cough!! In fact, when he was newborn, I think it soothed him!! Good luck!

Kris...29 with CF, married, mom to 4 month old son (no CF!)
