Coughing Cousin

A bit of a rant: heaven forbid the parents of the COUGHING, SICK TODDLER think to keep HER away from the rest of the family! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-mad.gif" border="0"> Why don't they ever think of the rest of the family and consider whether it would be the respectful thing to do to not expose everyone else to their illness- not just for your baby but definitely especially for her sake.

Just my .02. Hmmmmph. It irritates me when other peoples' illnesses so often become OUR problem- our kids miss so much due to their own illness. It's supremely unfair when they miss so much due to other people being sick, too. (sorry if I am being a little %*&%$# about this today, it just touched a nerve.)

When my daughter was 11 months, I made the decision to avoid kids with coughs. So in your case we would have dropped her off at her other grandparents so the rest of us could celebrate. But we are fortunate to have the grandparents live close to each other. Now that my kids are older and perhaps have higher immunities, I really don't ever worry about if anyone we are around is coughing. Being in school, I know they are exposed everyday. My kids never seem to come down with viruses after being around others with colds, coughs. Dr. Warwick made it very clear, that cf kids have higher immunities due to something he referred to in their blood. I think it is true based after watching my kids. But on the other hand, I have heard of others with cf coming down with a bunch of viruses. My kids do occasionally have lung infections, but I can never pinpoint who gave it to them. So, it is a hard call. Especially with her being so young, you really don't know yet if is likely she will get sick or not.
Sharon, mom of Sophia, 8 and Jack, 6 both with cf, Grant, 11 months no cf

That is definitely true!!

There is no way around it if they are in school/daycare every day and in other crowded places (i.e. church) on a regular basis... in that perspective a couple hours with family w/ vigilant attention to hygiene on very special occasions really pales in comparison to what they are exposed to day in and day out.

A very young infant- so hard to call. I still think the other parent needs to make responsible choices, especially if the child is significantly sick (i.e. not just getting over a slight cold.)

I wish that was true w/ Emily!! She comes down with more stuff than the other two... but she's not healthy in other regards (nutritionally speaking); maybe if she was she'd do better there.

.....maybe thats true, but.....isnt it the white blood cells/neutrophils that are part of the immune system one of the things that cause major problems in the lungs when they "come to fight an infection"...they tend to clot and harden in the mucus of the lungs instead of "fight the infection"...so i dont think dr warwick was suggesting that a cf'ers immune system is higher and therefore should not take more precautions. (there are several articles about this "immune systme/neutrophil" issue in saveferris' blog)
