Coughing more on Prednisone?

My daughter started 5 day Prednisone burst(on 2nd day) and Zyvox (also second day). She is coughing more today than when she started! Coughed up some clear mucus, I'm guessing the Prednisone opened her up more so she could get the mucus out? I thought the prednisone would tamp down her cough. Waiting on her culture, won't be ready til next week; If she keeps this up tomorrow I may call to see if a prelimary is back, way too soon for sensitivities. Thoughts?

There is really no telling. I doubt it is the prednisone (based on my experience). There certainly are a lot of viruses going around. If she has no fever, I'd probably give it another day or two to let the culture cook, but a call can never really hurt if it helps ease your mind.

Prednisone will definitely give a more productive cough if she is/was having a lot of inflammation. Now that things are opening up mucus is able to move more freely and get out of the smaller airways and come up. However if it is CLEAR this could leave me to concern that it very well maybe a virus as usually clear sputum is the virus itself. If it's a virus there is not much you can do besides let it run its course.

It sounds like things are opening up and making their way out-this could be due to the zyvox more than the prednisone. I'd just watch her closely and keep the doc informed. If she has a virus, the cough could be more due to that. I had a bad virus this winter and was on tons of drugs-but they'll only do so much when a virus has to run its course.

I do think my daughter did/does have alot of inflammation. Most of the time; her mucus is clear; wierd I know but it is very rare for her to have color to it. Even when her MRSA is flaring; it has been clear(at least nasal stuff; she swallows it usually)... I am hemming and hawing if I should call; not sure what else to do as the culture needs to come back and not sure if much should be changed until it's back. No Fever either; though she has been sick before with no fever. Been doing manual CPT in addition to VEST. Also, hard to read my daughter when she's on these 2 meds cause they make her REALLY grumpy and tummy upset.

Emily and Shawn have needed prednisone for illness and yes, cough increases once it starts working. There is generally junk trapped down there that needs to get out once the inflammation is reduced. Emily almost always goes through a period where she sounds worse before she starts getting better.

So it's not the prednisone 'causing' the cough, but rather the cough is the result of it working as it should. When she's on meds like this and symptomatic with cough, etc we are to also have her on sick plan- I hope the extra therapies help and as she continues with the abx she starts feeling better.

The only time cough is diminished with prednisone in our experience has been when it's rx'ed for something like croup, when the cough is NOT caused by lower resp infection but rather simply spasm in the upper airway and relaxing the airways/opening them up is all that's needed to relieve the cough.

I did call the office; Pretty much wants to see how the weekend goes; did say that like Harriet said; The prednisone is opening the airways to let the mucus move around. Just keep an eye on her; call back if she gets worse or I am concerned and I'll call in Monday; to check the culture. How long do you usually stay on Prednisone? My daughter has only been on 5 day bursts...High dose for 5 days.

Sometimes a brief burst is all that's needed. Usually though, as she is on inhaled steroids all the time, Emily only needs steroids with severe exacerbations- and in those cases she needs a high dose (generally 30mg twice a day at age 10/60-odd lbs) for about a week followed by a gradual taper of about the same amount of time.

My oldest has been sick with a vicious bronchitis and has needed Prednisone & abx for most of the last 3 weeks. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"> He was last put on a burst of 40mg twice a day with a short taper off and I truly hope he won't need any more. He's been sick as long as he has due to some mismanagement of the illness so he may not have needed it so long if we knew what we were doing in treating it.

So, my daughter's cough is much better. She is off the prednisone and still on Zyvox. Coughing is minimal. I do think that the prednisone opened her up to let the gunk out. Anyway, she is tolerating the zyvox , hates the taste. My kids have renamed Zyvox, "Dyvox", cause she hates it so much.
