If its really bad I take cough medicine-robitussin DM. My doc has told me that as long as I'm faithfully doing my chest pt during the day a little cough med at night is fine if I'm desperate. (not every night)
Now that I'm prego I don't take it though.
I do a neti pot before bed also which is so helpful. I use an extra pillow-plus I try to use really soft comfy pillows bc I think they relax me more which helps.
If I wake up from persistent coughing, I get up and try to hack it out. Then I go downstairs and mix very hot water with 1 tbl honey and drink that down. Then I eat a handful of salty chips or crackers.
It works everytime and I sleep the rest of the night.

Have you tried taking benedryl ? When this happens for my son I give him one 25 mg benedryl about an hour before bed (he's 100 lbs) and it helps him get to sleep. If you have any post nasal drip it will help with that as well. I have found it works much better than cough syrup, for him anyway. Even once when his cough was so bad they gave him codeine, the benedryl was more effective at getting him to sleep.

I hope you get some rest.
