coughing up a ton

hey all!

so I've been wheezing and rattling all day and decided to do an albuterol neb and vest. I start hacking up good stuff, probably the culprit to my wheezing, and all of a sudden, it's not coming from my lungs anymore. This happens all the time. I don't throw up, but I can tell the stuff I'm coughing up is coming from my esophagus, and not my lungs. The more I go coughing like this (hoping to still get stuff out of my lungs), the more I feel I WILL throw up. A few sips of water and easing up on the coughing resolves my icky feeling, but crap ends up still sitting in my lungs--not being able to be removed simply because I'm coughing from my esophagus/stomach. This happens no matter what (huff cough, autogenic drainage, vest, etc)...and it's always following good, deep lung coughs-I don't do therapies starting off nauseous, for example.

Does this happen to anyone else? Do you have any suggestions?

this happens with me when i've been swallowing a lot of mucus. I usually feel better if i just sort of throw up whats stuck in my esophagus, but when you can, try to spit out what you cough up then it doesn't all accumulate. it could also be some heart burn, I'm on protonix for that and that helps to keep the other pipes clear.
