hmm this is the 3rd time its happened..coughing up pure blood, without any mucus. it lasts for like 10 minutes maybe, and its less than a cup..maybe about half a cup in all. So do most other people with cf do this too? or maybe it has to do with my liver disease? (with portal hypertention)

I had severe hemoptysis (coughing up blood) for 2 months straight once. I went to emergency the first 4 times it happened. If this isn't something that you're used to, I would suggest going to emerg. If you don't think that its too serious, then try to wait it out. The 3 times that this has happened, have they been seperate incidents? or all on the same day. If its the same day, I would be worried and go to emerg. If its about a half cup, if it were me I may be a bit worried.

I would suggest calling your doctor or going to the emergency room. You never can be too cautions especially with the other complications you have from cf. Good luck.

Its not uncommon for cfers to cough up blood. It is called hemoptysis. I am considered to have it chronically. They always tell me if its a 1/2 cup or more it is considered to be serious enough to call the dr. At least to let them know. It should not be ignored. Left ignored it could get worse. Good luck

Definitely do something about it ( ESPECIALLY if it was 3 times in one day). Don't let it go unattended to, because it can get worse. A half of a cup deserves some attention, i would call my doctor at the least if i were you.If you can't get in touch with the doctor, then go to the emergency room, because if it were to get worse, you want to be in a place where they can help to stop it . I had about a half of a cup one night when i was laying down trying to sleep, and just coughed it out and lay back down and went to sleep. The next night, i had massive hemoptysis, and had to call 911. I'm not saying this to scare you, i just want you to know it shouldn't be taken lightly. Who knows.... it may never happen again, but at least let your doctor know and have a plan of action should you need it. let us know how you are doing.

Is it during your period? Have you had streaking of blood before during your period? YES I have a reason to ask! After a yaer of massive hemoptysis during menstruation I was finally diagnosed with pulmonary endometriosis, which was causing my bleeding. In this case, vitamin K and other regular measures won't help, it's endometrial tissue outside of your lungs, but inside of your chest wal, that is getting irritated by the rush of estrogen during your period, causing the hemorage the same as your period.

It is treated with birth control measure (varying.)
Just a thought,

<span style=" font-size: x-small;">My hemoptysis were always
massive and some were during my period and some not. Beth can you
please elaborate about pulmonary endometriosis? What exactly is it?
How did they discover that's what you have. It took me a few
years to get my Dr's to correlate my periods and my
hemoptysis. After telling them over and over again they started to
believe me. I am so glad you have shared this. I still have slight
hemoptysis once in awhile its seems to be around my period and when
I lay down to go to sleep. Always late at night. I would appreciate
your help. Thanks

I heard about the endometriosis aspect when i was in the hospital almost 2 years ago for hemoptysis. I seem to have hemoptysis problems right before and during my period. One doctor mentioned this to me, but thats all that was said about it. I was on birth control to help control hemoptysis, but for the estrogen aspect of it. It is believed that estrogen helps to keep the blood vessels pliable so they dont break as easily. I did have some relief with it, but the one thing that gave me better relief from hemoptysis is L-Lysine. I started taking it 2 years ago after i got out of the hospital (after reading about a woman who gave it to her son with cf). I got the info on it and started using it, and it has helped a LOT!

p.s. ~ I forgot to mention i do not lay flat to sleep anymore ( havent in 4 years) . I sleep on a wedge pillow i got out of a catalog. Since a TON of my hemoptysis's happened while i went to lay down, or already was laying down, i decided to not lay down flat anymore ,at allm unless absolutely necessary like for a cat scan, But i am always sure to warn them what might happen.

I get every once in awhile as well. Mine also usually happens when I lay down, then i cough for like 10-20 mins and with each cough and getting the stuff out the blood decreases then when I wake up in the morning its either totally gone or little streak but more a brown color cuz its just sitting in there. Its so strange what causes it, and strange that it happens mostly at night when we go to lay down. Maybe a few times it happened during the day but mostly at night. well good luck with everyone and even if its a little call the doctor or go to the emergency room cuz its never normally to cough up blood.

I'm a first time poster, but I would definetly suggest you see your doctor. My daughter has portal Hypertension and had a bleed last year. She required 5 units of blood and had to be banded. It is a very serious condition. Do you have dark stools too? Internal bleeding causes that too. Luckily her CF doc and GI doc have worked together to give her meds to requlate the situation. Thank God for Rainbow Babies and Childrens hospital.
