My boyfriend who is 23 with CF got out of the hospital a month ago for a tune up just recently started back up with his vest this week. For about three days now he is coughing up blood in little sporadic episodes... It is about the size of a dime with they mucus that he is coughing up. He wasn't doing is vest prior to this for about 6 months so my question is what could it be... bc it is not every time he coughs and it is not a lot. He is not short of breat but his chest hurts a little from the coughing and when he takes shallow breaths...... We already called his doctor and are now waiting to hear back from him.... Any one with ideas or have had a similar experience???

Thank you,
Kayla

I have never had a lung bleed. But I have recently had good results with taking extra calcium to stop nose bleeds. Calcium is required to start the clotting process. For me, it has worked very well.

The vest can definitely trigger bleeds if he is prone to them. I have frequent episodes like the one you're describing, and each time, I just rely on the acapella for a few days and stop taking Pulmozyme and Tobi. Then I resume later. They generally take care of themselves, though I have been hospitalized once for a bleed that didn't resolve itself. Still, good to talk to the doctor to be sure.
