First time coughed up blood yesterday -- very scarry for me and family. I have mild case of CF and mostly digestive problems. I have been pushing myself (stress, lots of activities) and messed up mentrual cycles. I use the cold compresses, ice water and elevate in bed. Is there anything else I can do? We are talking streaked phelem to a few teaspoon sized episodes. Could this mean I have an infection flaring up (usually I get sicker when I develop an infection)?? I am lost and confused. Anxious for it to quit (haven't coughed yet this morning-- just had clear my throat so I am not sure if it is still affecting me today.

I live in a very dry climate, get brochospams at lot (had a strong one the other day-- caused coughing attack). Did this not help the situation??

Advice would be appreciated.

Since its the first time for you I would have things checked out. For those of us who are too familiar with hemoptysis usually can tell what our triggers are. Stress is a big one for me as well as PMS & too much caffein. Given that you dont know for sure, you are better off to check things out so you have something to work with if it happens again. You did the most common things except you didnt mention if you take Vitamin K. Most of us use ADEK, but some of us also use additonal Vitamin K in addition to that. Let us know how you are doing....

I'm sorry you had your first bleed and I can imagine that pit in your stomach, panic-y feeling that you get the first time it happens.

From what I understand..normally that could indicate that:
A. you broke a blood vessel from coughing
B. you do have an infection brewing
I suppose it could be both, too.

I would call your doctor if you haven't already & let them know about it. My doctor always appreciates when I at least let him know, for his records.

I'll stress what Melissa said. Since this is your first time I would definitally get checked out. At the very least let your doctors know what is going on.

I seem to keep forgetting to tell my doc I get a few streaks of blood in my sputum lately!
It's become more frequent, but hasn't been a whole lot and seems to stop as soon as it started. I only get freaked out when it seems to increase in blood.
I'll be getting a CT scan in about a week, so we'll see how that goes!

My suggestion to mamerth would be to see the doc. It could also be the sinuses bleeding, and that's what I suspect was causing the streaks of blood in my sputum. But it's best to be safe by asking. I've heard that when you cough up about a teaspoon of blood, that's when it's time to take immediate action. The prevention of it would be to ask the doc before that ever happens, though!

monitoring my own coughing, I'll probably be calling the doc, too...it's silly not to take my own advice, eh?
