I had my first episode about 2 years ago. I told my doc, and he didn't care much either. I love my doc, he's awesome. So since he didn't think much of it, I figured it was no big deal. Then I found out a lot of us here have the same problem. He said as long as it wasn't nonstop continual and didn't become a lot of blood, I could just let it happen.

Kj only coughed up 2 tsp and her docs gave her transemic acid (sp) to clot her blood. She took this 3 times a day for a week. They took her off of hypertonic saline and cut down on her physio till she had no more bleeds. They also stuck her in hospital for a 12 day tune-up. Kj had caught a cold 2 weeks before and I think when she did her lung function test that she blew so hard that a blood vessel popped. Her lung function was also down by 10 %.

I am glad her docs were very pro active in her care as it put my mind at ease. Keep on your sons, doctors case till he is more proactive. He could need a tune-up?

I have read about large bouts of coughing up blood, and it scares the jeebies outa me!!!

Best of luck to your son and I hope it stops happening <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Unfortunately, coughing up blood (as long as it's not excessive) becomes a "normal" thing for CF. I know it doesn't sound normal. But there may not be much your doc <i><b>can</i></b> do for it if it's nothing particularly serious. Have them check it out, but don't freak out if the doc doesn't do anything. Especially if the bleeding isn't excessive or doesn't continue. Sometimes it just happens.
