Coughing up Blood

So my girlfriend's little brother has been diagnosed with cf... but the thing is he is just a half brother. She herself has never been tested and never in her life has had any sort of real respritory infection... she is in excellent shape and looks great in fact being a model. She is 17, but last year she was coughing up blood for a period of a few months and went to the hospital for tubulercolosis which tested negative. It stopped for a while and started again a few months ago with coughing up a little bit of blood maybe twice a week sometimes less. She has had a chronic cough her whole life but its generally mild and sometimes can go for days without having it. Also in the past she's had a couple times she simply quit breathing and could not take a breath one lasting over a minute. Besides this though shes full of energy ect... is there any possibility she might not have cf and if she does is this very severe? She was diagnosed with athma when younger. Thanks

the only advice i can really say is, there is no harm in gettin a test called the "sweat test" this is a test that will prove iif she has cf or not, i have gone through a stage once in my life when i was coughin up blood, no mucus. it was just pure blood, the doctors actually said to me that they thought the reason it happened to me was for the only way to warn me i had an infection ( at this point i felt fine just a bit scare cause it had never happened to me before) i obviously hope she is ok and cf free but like i said there is no harm in gettin a test... i hope i have helped u in a way just my little experience there..

take care dude

I have CF and I have coughed up blood a few times the Doctor says it is because my airways are irritated.... Ummm for your friend I think the sweat test would be a good idea. But you would think the Doctors would have tried that knowing the history with the half sibling..... good luck

If she does in fact have CF... you may want to tell her that without proper treatment - she WILL NOT stay healthy.

It's better to know and get the proper medical attention (or in the case of a blood/genetic test know if she is a carrier) than to be ignorant.

Better to be safe then sorry. If she's this healthy and hasn't been diagnosed, just imagine how much more healthier she will be if she gets diagnosed and is able to get treatment. What if she gets worse? Would she rather never know and get worse? Or know and get treatment? That's the question she has to ask herself. Just because she doesn't know, doesn't mean it will go away and she'll be fine.

That's something her and her doctor would have to talk about. For all we know, she may not even have CF. Who knows till she gets tested.
