Coughing

My daughter is 13 months with CF. She has had a bad cough for about 10 days now, and is on Ceftin for it. (it has been 7 days) Today she coughed so hard she threw up! I am now totally worried. The cough is better, but it is still there. Has anyone else had their child on Ceftin and did it work? What about coughing so hard they vomited? I talked to the clinic and they said she is probably just getting the loose phlem out and they weren't too concerned since the cough has improved. I, of course, and still worried. What do you guys think? I would love some opinions. Oh- and after the puking incident she ate two complete YO Baby yogurts and has been fine.

Thanks,
Zoe mom to Kate

When DS was about 2-3 months old he developed a cough -- more of a dry one -- would cough so hard he'd throw up his formula. This went on for a couple of weeks, I'd had him in for his 2 month check up and shots and the peds doctor said he was fine. That's what CFers do, they cough. Went to his first cf clinic appointment, got yelled at. DS had bronchitis.

Guess I'd keep an eye on her. Maybe up her CPT if you haven't already to get that stuff up and out of her. We usually do CPT 3 times a day. We up it to 4 if DS is coming down with something and increase the amount of time on each position.

I should add, that DS was coughing constantly because of his bronchitis. Sometimes he will get a glob of something stuck in his throat, start coughing and he'll hurl. Just one of those things. Just learn to know your child's cough.

Yes, my older daughter has done this a lot of times. She would be crying and coughing and would throw up a bunch of mucous. I always figure it's best to be out of her lungs than in her lungs

Yes, my niece, 5 years old, throws up when she is having a major crying fit and a lot of mucus comes out. Its one of those bad things with the good outcome.

Vomiting with a hard coughing fit happens often, actually. I don't remember whether or not I did as a wee child (hehee... wee child!), but I do it all the time now. As do many other adults I talk to. It seems disturbing, but you come to learn... "normal" in CF land is a whole different type of normal than the normal you're used to.

Hi, my daughter is 2 1/2, and whenever she gets into crying fits or sometime's she will cough so hard it causes her to throw up, but when she does it is alot of mucus (and some of what she ate). That has been happening ever since i can remember.. also she is jsut getting over a 3 week infection (dealing with everything from colds to diraehha, etc).. and last week she threw up about a cup (no lie) of just mucus. It is good for them to get it out! And her doctors aren't that worried.. it is normal. Better out than in!

I dont remember as a child, but as an adult it happens. Its usually from more of a tickle in the throat type cough. I actually feel great afterwards. You get a bunch of crap out. Its the hard way to do it to. I would tend to agree with your docs...if the cough is getting better & overall she seems fine since she ate then I would just keep an eye on her. Emily is right about CF cough etc being quite different then other things. Once you learn to distinguish the difference it will be get easier. AND you will learn!
