COUGHING!!!

I concur with everyone else to get a culture done. The reason we do cultures; is to find out what bug(bacteria) is growing and what antibiotic the bacteria is sensitive to. Kids with CF usually need a longer course of antibiotics than child without CF as well as they may need stronger antibiotics. When my daughter starts up with cough I increase her VEST and nebs(an extra albuterol)..She does 3 vests a day. I also try to deal just with her CF doc; either I'll call the nurse and leave a message and/ or talk to him myself. A cough for a month is concerning; I would want a culture, the CF doc to listen to her lungs, and a definitive plan of action.

Ashmomo - (since we go to the same clinic <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> )I'm suprised they didnt culture her..I would see if you can get in sooner.. Logan has his appt on October 5th hoping he gets before that.</end quote></div>

Yeah, I asked them to culture Ashlee but they said she had to do a visit. I told them this cough has been going on for over a month, probably close to 2 and they just increased her treatments and nebs (Alb & Pulm). I will give it this last weekend...if it still persists I will call again!

I hope Logan's cough gets better before his visit! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Thank you SO MUCH for the advice! I just know in my gut this is not normal. After reading the posts this morning I called clinic and said I wanted to bring her in. They told me to see my reg. pediatrician and get a viral screen from her nose and to have the reg. ped. listen to her lungs. Then, they would do an x-ray if needed. I was SO MAD and I think the nurse could tell because I got a phone call back about a half an hour later. The doctor said to order the x-ray, prescribe augmentin, and then they did the throat culture and swabbed her nose for viruses. I'm glad that we are at least doing something, but I was so shocked that they want you to see the regular pediatrician first. I think I'm just going to have to be pushier (and I've never really seen the need before our clinic has been great so far!) I was just really frustrated that I have to suggest the x-ray and throat culture! I mean HELLO, she's got CF for goodness sake!! Anyway, now is the waiting game for the results....

Oh- and Kate has been coughing mainly during the Vest, but I do hear her at random times too. At preschool they have noticed it too and this is the second year with her teachers so they know she NEVER coughed last year. They have noticed that the cough tends to be when she is on the playground or after playground time when she comes in. They think it is actually better this week than the past few weeks. And we do live in an area (St. Louis) with a lot of humid weather with a lot of crap in the air.

Thanks for all the tips. Sure hope she isn't growing any crazy stuff!

We've learned to skip the local clinic -- never get clear xrays, told coughing is normal, it's what they do, told he sounds clear when to us he sounds junky (bronchial cough) and finally -- they tell us it's "just viral", meaning they don't have a clue and we end up wasting time and money. Now I just call the cf clinic instead to help make a determination.
