about 15 minutes ago i started coughing up blood after i had just layed down and haven't ever before, and no one seems worried about it here at the hospital! idk it might not be a big deal but i'm freaking out, i know its common but still, it isn't a huge bleed, i can tell its bleeding and when i cough i can feel it in my upper right lung and i know its going into my stomach too despite me spitting it all out cause i feel like puking and i can taste it even after rinsing out my mouth, its on the back of my throat and its disgusting! i know its a good deal of it in my stomach because of nose bleeds and how much it takes to make me puke, the nurse is going to call the pulmonologist, ok now the pulmonologist has called back and has stopped nebs and vest till further notice, i'm writing this as i'm hacking up blood

I freaked out too the first time that I ever did it but my CF doc told me not to worry aobut it unless it was more than like 1/4 cup. I completely knew it was blood when it was going to start before I even hacked it up....there was just something different about it.

If the bleeding gets to be too much, they may take you in for something called and embolization...in all before the transplants, I had 6 of them. The will sedate you (I was never all the way under) and go in through the groin and up into the lung and shoot little coils into the spots that are bleeding. Again, this is only if it gets to be too much. My last episode was 8 and 7 days before I got the transplant (it was fixed the day I went into the ER, coughed up blood the next day, and had it fixed again). With this episode, I coughed up between 3-4 cups of blood. Needless to say, I got the transplant at the perfect time because they said another episode like that would have killed me.

I hope that it doesn't get that far for you and that you get better soon!!

I'm sorry this has happened. I remember the first time I did & the doctor was so nonchalant about it He told me to go to the ER if it was 1/4 cup or more total. He then explained that this is normal for CFs.
Mine turned out to be a reaction to Pulmozyme (had recently started it).

Tips I've learned from friends here:
~Don't lie flat, sleep propped up
~Lay off the vest if it's more then streaks (as long as Dr knows)
~Not do HS or Pulmozyme for a day or two (again, make sure Dr agrees)

What do you think has caused this? Have you started something new (inhaled) or maybe you coughed hard/deeply and broke a blood vessel? It's so frustrating not really pin pointing what causes it

I wonder if vigorous CPT can cause this...anyone?

At any rate, I hope it lessens & SOON!
Hang in there

I believe that it can because a lot of the episodes that I had were during CPT. I had way more than just the 6 that I had embolizations on.
