My daughter didn't start showing any symptoms for CF until about 12 months, so I anything is possible when it comes to CF. Hopefully the test will come back negative. Avery was not salty as a baby though she is now as a toddler, so that is not a for sure way to diagnose CF. Good luck and just think that the odds are more in your favor than not.

There are many of us who are not diagnosed until late childhood, late 30s or 40s. It could very well be CF, it could very well not be CF. Some of us don't present all the "classical" symptoms. I know this can be a stressful time for you, not knowing and all, but all I can say is that make sure you are getting the test done at an accredited CF centre. If you're getting the sweat test done, I would suggest getting the dna test done as well. There is a such thing as a false negative, but not a false positive. Sometimes babies can't produce enough sweat for the tests, so sometimes they will come back negative regardless. DNA test is always a must.

I agree with the above posters. My son was not salty and he also never produced enough sweat to get a positive read until he was 4 months. I would ask them to do a DNA right away (ask about the Guthrey panel test as it is done with only a tiny heal stick to the foot rather than a blood draw...some of the little ones can not give enough blood to do the DNA test because they are then the 10lbs...repeated sweat tests can be frustrating and a waste of precious time). This way you have the DNA, contunue to try the sweat test, and you can find out in 2 weeks either way.

Also know that dairy sensativities and other food allergies can cause frequent stools. Are you breastfeeding or using formula? You can also ask them to do a RAST test to check for dairy allergy. It's not the definiative test but a good start if a baby is just not responding to formula changes or diet changes (in the case of breastfeeding).

I hope you can find an answer quickly so you can rest easy...it may be simply his little digestive system needs to mature. Definately keep looking into it and I will keep you in my thoughts. Please feel free to email me.

Warmly,

Tonia,

You are very lucky your doctor wants to test for CF this early -- so many mothers (& their kids) on here suffer for weeks or months trying to figure out why their kids are having problems.

I agree with the other replies -- sweat tests can give a false negative (see my full story at my blog site here (scroll to the bottom) My kids are a mild case and didn't get diagnosed until their teen years, so just a word of caution to you that even "normal" sweat tests can still mean CF when you follow up with full genetic testing.

Best of luck -- try not to worry too much -- it doesn't sound like he has too many sypmtoms, there might be another reason he isn't gaining weight.
