I recently found out I am a carrier for CF during routine pregnancy testing. Thank god my DH is not a carrier so our baby I am carrying is fine but I have a 8 yo from another man and he has had resp issues since about 3 yrs and when he was born he was coughing up green stuff and so had to have a barium enema and xrays just hours after his birth. They never dxd him with anything as far as that goes but I guess his meconium backed up into his stomach or something like that, I really don't remember what they told us about it because it didn't seem like anything of consequence at the time. Fast forward 8 years and we have been dealing with allergies, constant sinus infections, and respritory infections and problems. He had his tonsils and adnoids removed about 2 years ago and it really hasn't helped much.
So we go Wednesday to a ped pulmunary specialist. Any thoughts, I am stressing and worrying. Should I be???

Your son's story sounds similar to ours. Similar issues at birth, nobody made a big deal out of it -- they'd thought he'd stooled in the womb; however, about 12 hours after he was born he started throwing up green stuff. In his case xrays showed that he had a bowel obstruction caused by meconium illeus.

It's good you're going to a pulmo specialist. Hopefully they can get to the bottom of his issues. How are his stools now? How's his weight? Does he sweat out a lot of salt?

Thanks for the response, as far as his stools, ugh, he has diareah(sp?) often and he has 'accidents'. He has had 2 just this past school year. I just don't understand them, but he says he thinks he is just going to pass gas and then it ends up being the run down his leg kind of bm. Sorry for TMI!! I have never really noticed his skin tasting like salt but never thought to pay attention to that so I will be checking. His weight seems to be fine, he goes up and down a little and gets into these times when he just doesn't want to eat much and then other times when he is hungry all the time. I know that could just be normal kid growing spurt stuff. I just don't know what to think and want answers like NOW! YKWIM

Honestly, I think you have enough symptoms to definately want to rule out CF. Especially since you are a known carrier.

The loose stools & unexpected accidents due to 'gas' are very common with CF, my son has them and I know others do as well.

While I hate to wish CF on anyone, if this is what it is I hope you are able to get some answers so you can begin to move forward.

FYI, they will likely do a 'sweat test' initially. They are not 100% reliable; so if you get a borderline result push for bloodwork. Given that you know you have it they should be able to check his fairly easy.

Best of luck, and please do let us know how things go at the pulmo appt.
