CPT in a 2.5 year old

We had my daughter's first official visit at Riley's CF Center yesterday. The RT wants us to start CPT and then think about the vest in 6 months or so. She is almost 3 and does not have any respiratory symptoms, but obviously we want to keep it that way. She is very interested in the percussing and likes it for ABOUT 5 MINUTES! Then she says "I'm done," and runs away to play. Obviously it is not effective if I am chasing her around. yesterday i got maybe 10 minutes in. How the heck to you make a 3 year old hold still for 30 minutes of percussing???? I am very anxious to get the vest instead as that seems like it would be a lot easier............

Before DS got his vest at age 3 we did CPT 3-4 times a day for 20 minutes. And he did get distracted and wanted to go play, but we'd try to keep him occupied with dvds or cartoons and didn't let him get away with not doing it. We had/have a routine and we stick with it -- CPT in the morning, after daycare/work and before bed. Throw in an extra one or two if he's sick.

I would think your doctor could prescribe a vest right now, imagine she's large enough as several on this site have gotten them for there 12 month olds, so if she's not cooperating with CPT then you should look at that option.

CPT is a very unfun reality of CF. Its not easy to get a toddler to sit still for a full session. We tried a bunch of things. We got a trampoline and one of those big exercise balls. If she would sit still for a full "beating" we would offer up ten minutes of jumping on the trampoline or bouncing (with me holding her sitting on it) on the exercise ball. Its not a perfect treatment but it is good.

You might try setting a timer before you begin. Work up to 20 minutes. So the first time, set it for 12 minutes and tell her you have to go until it goes off. Then day after day add a minute here and there until you are up to 20 minutes.

The vest is great, but my daughter still shuts it off half way through and tells me she's done. We still have to find ways to motivate her to say the course. We do 30 minutes on the vest each time, so its a lot of time for her to sit still. I've found using it for special stories, songs or playing board games work better than tv shows.

I definitely would ask your doctor about getting a vest sooner. It really does make life easier. Our DD is 20 months (almost) old, and she's had the vest since she was about 9 months old. Her chest had to measure 16 inches. Do you know why they want to wait on it?
