we were givin 1 rubber thing that we were told to do his cpt with. they said since he is small our hands were to big to do it with. i am sure it is great and true, ut in a case where you accendently leave the house with out it I would think it would be ok to use the hand method.. which i am sure I can figure out, but either way any tips or advise would be well appreciated

I'used both my hands and the percussor when my dd was an infant. Just make sure to cup your hand so that you aren't hitting with the center of your hand, it should sound like a pop. You do not need to do it very hard, equivalent to the pats you do when burping is fine. We were also told that if we used our hands when they are that small, you can actually hit two spots at once. So by using my hand correctly I could hit the side and back or side and front or two fronts or two backs at the same time.

Our clinic frowns upon those rubber things just for the reason you mentioned. Alternative ways are great, but IMHO everyone should know how to do manual CPT just with your hands. You never know when you might have to use it....like driving a standard transmission LOL!

I also feel no matter the size of the patient that you get a better treatment, but again this is MY experience.

We were taught to practice clapping on your thigh. If it doesnt sound like a horse gallopping then your hand isnt positioned corrrectly or if it hurts like slapping. Granted muscles can get sore, but this is different then the sting from not having the hand cupped right.

BTW cupped mean like you are trying to hold water in your hands.
