creon and milk

I posted a question in the Nutrition section about taking creon and drinking milk. (My initial question stemmed from a misunderstanding of the literature I was given about creon I thought my daughter couldn't have milk or ice cream at all.) I have a follow-up question and I'm taking the advice of one of the respondents and posting this in the Family section so more people will see it...

I added some half & half to her usual smoothie of fruit, juice, and protein powder. But shortly afterwards she said that her throat hurt "up and down". When I questioned her, she described how it hurt (burned) starting at her stomach, moved up to her throat, then back down to her stomach. She had the "up and down" pain a couple more times in the morning. The rest of the day she was fine.

At dinner I gave her another smoothie (without protein powder) and shortly afterwards she again mentioned the pain. The following morning, she awoke with that same sensation and wouldn't eat at all. It took me three hours to convince her to eat even a bite -- but once she took that first bite, she seemed to be okay with eating.

She hasn't had any milk since that dinner, nor has she had any more "up and down" pain. Before starting on creon, she had no problem with milk (that I'm aware of -- she's never complained about any pain, but she's always burped all day long. I assumed that the creon eliminated the burping, but maybe stopping the milk was the reason she wasn't gassy...)

Has anyone else had a problem with creon and milk? She's lost about 10% of her body weight since starting on medication, so I'd love to find something quick and easy to get some of that weight back on. Adding cream to the smoothie sounded so promising! Did I add too much too quickly? (BTW, she can't have soy so I don't have a suitable substitute for milk.)

Thank you for any advice you can share to put some calories in her diet (she's rejected oils or butter being added; she doesn't like cakes or cookies or ice cream.) I was so hoping to have her weigh-in this week show an increase. Now I'm just hoping that it won't show another loss!

I'm wondering if it's heart burn. some foods really give me bad heartburn and they're not the typical heartburn type foods that affect the non-cf population.

maybe ask her doc about a PPI such as protonix, aciphex, prevacid, prilosec or nexium.

or give her some zantac/tums before the dairy to see if that helps.

that's all i can think of - hope she feels better soon.

Heartburn or reflux were my first thoughts. They seem to be farily common in people wcf. I hope you can get it figured out and that she feels better soon!

Taking creon should not have any affect with milk versus any other fatty food. Maybe she does have a mild allergy though, and maybe getting back on milk suddenly after being off of it for awhile caused problems. Milk can cause allergic/sensitive babies to spit up and maybe it had a similar affect on her. You can have her tested specifically for a milk allergy to confirm.
Our 5yo CF dd is moderately allergic to milk. She was severly allergic as a baby - it made her spit up a lot and gave her diarhea. Now that she is 5, she can eat ice cream and yogurt and she takes creon. She's never mentioned any problems like this, though.
