I do not agree to the "empty calories" thing... Sodas contain lots of sugar, so healthy or not, if your pancreas is still working or you use enough insulin with it, the sugar will be taken out of the blood and changed into fat in the fat-cells.

I take an enzyme with sodas, though I rarely drink carbonated beverages if I can help it. The carbonic acid is tough on the stomach lining, especially if it's already being overloaded with anti-inflammatory meds. Also, I stay away from caffeine as much as possible because it really interferes with my meds for bipolar disorder.

Sodas in general are a lousy way to take in calories. I drink cranberry juice as often instead because it's actually MORE calories, plus some vitamin, and the benefit of being approved by the National Kidney Foundation as something healthy for the kidneys.

When I say empty calories I am referring to calories of no nutritional value. The sugar content alone will put on weight thus has calories as my husband can attest to (ha ha) thus many people drink diet to avoid some of the sugar intake. Its just an "unhealthy" way of getting calories.

Does the soda you drink contain caffeine? If so, this is known to speed up your metabolism so you burn more calories. Take a look at some of the diet pill products on the market. Many of them contain caffeine for this purpose.

Soda also increases your risk for osteoporosis and diabetes. Things we are already prone to just by having CF.

Just drinking soda too gain weight is not a viable solution in my mind. Switch out the soda with ensure plus, take your creon and you will be in a better position to gain weight.

Hey Uli,

I know that it can cause you to gain weight (it=sodas). I was simply using the term a dietician had given to me in regards to sodas. If you are looking at a 2400 calorie diet and you are drinking 4 sodas a day that is over half of your caloric intake and what do you have to show for it ... a bunch of sugars with (like Mel said) no real nutritional value.

You would probably be better served to trade out a soda for something else a little more balanced - like Rami mentioned an ensure or something to that effect. I traded out a soda for a milkshake when I was trying to wean off them.

Take Care,
Lindsey

Holy cow, cappuccinos too! You sound like how I used to be <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I used to drink WAY too much caffeine and when I cut back I felt SO much better on many levels.

I also have trouble with Mexican food:

Cutting back on caffeine will also be good for bone health:

In general, there is no such thing as "Zero Calories", either!
The energy of water is 1,000 calories, or 1kCal. How a soda can be less than the equivalent of water sound illogical, AND, when they advertise calories in the states, they don't put the little 'k' in with it, despite all calories are measured in 'kCals'!
taking at least one Creon with the amount of soda probably won't hurt, but DEFINITELY take in MORE CALCIUM!!
The soda burns up the calcium, and with the malabsorption problem we already have, replacing the calcium is vital!
I take calcium before bedtime, which I heard was actually the best time. However, don't take too much calcium (maybe for women, too much is not likely), because too much causes a few disorders, such as quick temper--there was another one, but forgot (hopefully senility is NOT the other one! hehe!).
