Just a quick question.. I don't even want to talk about me so much because my friend is so sick and I can't think of anything but him but I did have a question..

I have had a sinus infection for a few weeks been treated by my primary doctor with Avelox... I have done two rounds and also have had increased steroid dose.. I don't feel better.. I am not real sick.. just kind of dragging.. so what I did is I emailed my CF nurse to let her know.. I never know when I should talk to them or when I should talk to my primary... so anyway..she said as a rule whatever we culture in our lungs, we also culture in our sinus so she didn't think I was on a strong enough antibiotic????

Has anyone else heard this.... I trust my CF nurse whole heartedly.. I was just wondering.. what you thought..??

I have cultured MRSA in my sinuses - but, I have never cultured MRSA in my lungs.
This has been confirmed by sputum cultures & bronchoscopy samples. So in my case it would not hold true because they could not say that since I do not culture anything in my lungs that my sinuses are also free from nasties.

I have cultured yeast in my sinuses, cepacia and other pseudo nasties in my lungs. But, sometimes the yeast is in both places...guess it depends. BTW, still praying for your friend John. Hugs, Jenn <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

This is true...we can culture the same in our sinuses as our lungs. I have cultured pseudo in my sinuses for a looong time now. The bad thing is....it is harder to get the infection out of our sinuses. It does take some strong antibiotics to get rid of those sinus infections. Good Luck...and I am praying for John!

Just recently the culture from my lungs was resistant to Cipro, but not the culture from my sinuses. So, Cipro cleared the sinus infection & I needed other stuff for the lungs. So, it is not always the case that one general antibiotic will target your sinus infection if they are just going from your lung culture & not your sinus culture. Go to your ENT & get a culture.

I have a question for you all....do you get routine sinus cultures just as you do with lung cultures? I have never gotten a sinus culture, although I've had plenty of sinus infections. I usually have a lung culture done every 3-4 months at my clinic appt, or if I get sick. I was just curious about this and wonder if it is something I should request or does it not really matter??

Thanks,

Never, but I have a feeling it is coming in the next year. My sinuses are kicking more than ever & think I might have to actually address it.. NO NO NO not something else!

Jen, I'm sure you could request one it if you want to. But if your sinuses aren't giving you any problems I wouldn't worry about it. My sinuses where cultured when I had my sinus surgery, that's how I found out what was in them. But I haven't had one since then, but get lung cultures on a regular bases.

Actually, because of all the problems that I have with my sinuses...my ENT doc cultures the "junk" in there quite regulary. Unfortunately, I have still not been able to get rid of the pseudomonas that has been growing in there for such a looooong time. I had 5 sinus surgeries last year alone...and still have so many problems. I have to go every 2-3 weeks just to be cleaned out. My last surgery I actually had sinus walls removed in each side to create a huge opening...but still it doesnt drain. I have constant sinus infections and a headache that never goes away. I wish you luck! It is definitely an awful thing to deal with on a daily basis.
