Culture (staph & h-flu)

Parker has cultured staph and h-flu the last couple times he's had a culture (both within last 1.5 months). Since the last time (week and a half ago), he's gotten over his cold and has gone back to his regular self, only coughing maybe once every other day, just to clear things.

Well, in the last couple of days, he has been coughing a lot more than normal and it's a cough where he coughs a few times each "episode". (I hope I'm explaining this correctly). I called the CF coordinator today and she said to do the regular, up Vest and do the Albuterol and to call if it gets worse or doesn't get any better. She also stated that it sounds like he's getting a cold (which it doesn't seem like to me).

So far we have only done the Vest more and will be doing Albuterol later tonight. My question: When do you assume that it's the stuff that he's culturing that is causing the problems and how long do I give him to "get better". . . I'm really hoping that he's not getting a regular cough at this age. Also, since he was okay for awhile, does that mean that it's NOT the staph/h.flu?

Thanks in advance,
Shannon

My daughter's culture just came back with staph/h.flu. I haven't really thought about it, but this is the first year where both of my kids seem to have a regular cough. uhhh! We keep trying to treat it (steroids, oral and iv antibiotics), but it just seems to come back. I have no idea if the staph has caused my daughter to cough. But I know psuedomonas has caused a dry repetitive cough for my son. For my kids, if the cough lingers for more than a few weeks and it is dry that it is caused by something other than a cold. I am no expert though. It is hard to figure out. My kid's dr really thinks my kids keep getting cold after cold this year. Doesn't appear that way to me.

Shannon -- Alyssa has cultured both of those in the past. She pretty much always cultures staph, unless we are right off a dose of antibiotics. Our CF center said a cough for more than 5 days needs attention and antibiotics. If they know what Parker is culturing and his cough doesn't go away by day 5 -- they should start him on an antibiotic that will counter the staph and h-flu. Our CF nurse said that for now Alyssa's baseline is "no cough" and so anything off baseline is when we call in. Eventually her baseline will change, but they are hoping that is years down the road.

My son Aidan, three years old, often cultures those two things. Never PA but always Staph and recently H Flue. We've been okay in the cough department, nothing but his sinuses are really affected. He is currently on two weeks of IVs and will have surgery on Wednesday.

I too don't understand how the doctors know if it is a bacteria or flare-up or something else. Aidan's lungs are beautiful on his latest CT scan but his sinuses are horrible. Best of luck, the answers never seem too clear with CF!
