Culturing Pseudomonas AGAIN!!!

Ugh, unfortunately, it's just one of those things that eventually they'll get. Despite proper handwashing, sanitizing things, avoiding things.... We were told when DS was first diagnosed about how some day he'll probably culture pseudo and have to be on Tobi, but "it would be a long time off". We were led to believe it wouldn't happen 'til he was a lot older.

DS first cultured pseudo when he was 3 months old -- at the time I we'd been doing cpt 4 times a day with albuterol/atrovent nebs because he'd come home from the NICU with bronchitis(enterbactor choclae sp) that caused him to cough so hard he'd constantly throw up his formula.

It's just so frustrating when you do everything you're supposed to and then the pseudo culture -- really brings home the realization that our child really DID have cf. Prior to that it all just seemed like a bad dream, a mistake.

You are not doing anything wrong! We had the same issue with our daughter, Hannah. She had one positive PA, then a round of Cipro and Tobi. Then she had another positive PA the following month, so another round of Cipro and Tobi. She was then clear for a year. Then it showed up again, so we did the Cipro and Tobi. It has now been about a year and a half of clear PA cultures. I realize that it can pop up again at any time, but at least I think we are keeping it under control.

Don't beat yourself up over this. It sounds like you have done a great job!

I felt the same way last month when my daughter was cultured with PA...what am i doing wrong!!!?? We NEVER miss a dose of xoepenex or pulmozyme, and never skip a chest pt session! i have 2 air purifiers in my apt, my child isnt in daycare, no animals, antibacterial gel all the time!! but our cf clinic explained that it is sooo easy to get. they only recommended to be sure bathrooms and kitchens are agressively cleaned on a regular basis and neb sets are sanitized and sterilized after every use (which im sure all of us do anyway). and they also mentioned bath toys...to be sure to clean them with a disenfectant (lysol wipe, etc..) and squeeze all of the water out of them...they said that pseudomonas is frequently found in standing water, even water that comes from your tap. Anyway, hope that helps, i know how frustrating it is! Good Luck!
