Culturing staphyloccocus aureus

I have been culturing staph aureus since the early 1980s. I wasn't diagnosed with CF until a year ago. I've been on and off oral antibiotics for a week or two here and there several times a year most of my life. It wasn't really a big deal. My recent decline in health 2 years ago was due to mycobacterium avium complex. The drugs to treat that made my staph mutate somewhat so the normal for me orals didn't work. Last fall I did 2 weeks of IV antibiotics to get my staph back under control. I've been off all abx since then and am back to my regular pre-cf dx health. Don't be afraid of staph aureus. I've never cultured pseudo or any other common CF bugs other than MAC. ~Juliet

Both of my girls have cultured Staph and MRSA since they were very young. Kayla when she was dx at 14 months old, and Hannah at 1 month.

Both girls still have PFTs in the low 100%. Kayla has lung damage, Hannah does not.

Hannah has cultured both MRSA and Staph and PA, all at the same time.

Our clinic does not treat for the Staph unless the kids are having symptoms of a flare up.

Hope that helps a little. I know it's difficult when something new pops up in those cultures!

They advised us againts HS for now b/c she is onlt 1 y/o and has no respiratory symptoms, so they don't want her to start doing the nebulizer.

Nope, she does not. She never had any flare ups, does culture staph from time to time, they put her on antibiotics a few times (Augmentin) but that was preventative (had sore throat and a cold). I asked them about more prevention, but they said you have to weigh the risk/benefits, so they don't want her to start a neb. We do have a respiratory therapist coming to do her phisio 3 time a week but he almost never finds any mucus (has found none for months and months now).
