Aminocaproic Acid, 500 mg. Prescription is for 4-6 tablets every six hours, as needed.

I have experimented taking this drug in various ways:

a) taking 4 pills every 6 hours all the time, increasing as needed if I start seeing increased streaking

b) taking it ONLY after seeing streaking or very bloody cough

c) taking it when I start getting a lung infection

Generally, I have settled on taking it when I see some significant streaking (which I consider to be blood stained sputum or worse) and start with 4 pills a couple times a day and increase depending on the incidence of blood in my cough. This seems to work best and keeps me from having to take yet another medication all the time and also keeps me from having to buy it as often.

It won't keep hemoptasis away (as noted elsewhere, that's all about airway clearance and preventing infections); however, before I used this medication I was having embolizations 2 or more times each year and now I have them only once every 3 or 4 years. Generally, this seems to control the hemoptasis enough that IV antibiotics can get it under control before having to have an embolization.

Of course, I may not be agressive enough with my hemoptasis. Short of coughing up 6 oz in 24 hours (or repeated incidents of less, but steady blood), I generally don't even think about IVs.

Maybe it is just a conincidence, but maybe it has helped prevent it. I also take vitamin E and a multiple vitamin w/iron, and magnesium. I also take vitamin C, but not like I should. I was taking the ABDEK vitamins, but I don't see the need for it when I am taking a multiple vitamin. Sometimes I will rotate between the two. I may ask my doctor about lysine on my next visit. This site was the first that I had heard about it helping to prevent hemoptasis.

I am taking 2000mg of L-Lysine a day of course I am on IV's right now but I haven't had any blood!!!!! I also take vit. K everyother day and everyday if there is hemoptysis.
