I haven't had it done, but I have discussed all of the options with my OB in case we decide to have another child. She actually doesn't recommend CVS for a couple reasons. One is that it carries a higher risk of miscarriage and the other is that it can give you a false negative. If you aren't going to abort but just want to know, I would wait and do an ammnio a few weeks later. There is also a brand new test coming out that can be done as early as 8 weeks where they draw blood and are able to separate out fetal cells from the circulation. They can test those cells for CF (all off a blood sample). My OB said it would be available in 6-9 months but you could ask about it....</end quote></div>

Bumping . . . has anyone else heard anything about this kind of blood test to determine CF in a fetus? I'd ask my OB about it but not sure what to call it?

I just saw this again. I am 100% positive the blood test is in the works. I discussed it in detail with my OB who had just had an educational meeting about it that week with the lab running it. It is not only for CF, but several other common genetic disorders. I can try to get more info on it, but am positive it exists. I am a veterinarian, so I obviously have a lot of medical training. We spent about 15 minutes discussing the technique of the test etc. Basically, there are always a small amount of fetal cells that enter the maternal circulation. If a blood sample is spun down at en extremely high speed, the fetal cells can be separated and tested for genetic diseases.
