Daily Symptoms of CF

Yup, gas is a CF thing. I do better when I eat mostly fish, chicken, turkey, venison for meats. So low fat stuff, but in large quantities. Also avoid dairy and fats. A lot of carbo stuff give me gas too. OK, seriosly, just about EVERYTHING gives me gas, its just a matter of how much...... *grin* Miralax a few times a week helps out, as does prilosec. I'm sure I am not the only CFer who has developed rather elaborate strategies for getting rid of "excess flatus" in social situations......

Yep...I've always had more problems with my digestive system. I am not able to eat a lot of red meat, it really bothers my stomach. But I have recently found that consuming lots of bread (which I love) is a huge culprit for me. As mentioned earlier, not taking the enzymes has a way worse effect!

And OMGosh!!! Thanks for posting this I thought I was alone in these problems but now I see that I am not. These are some great tips and I am going to try some of them.

I saw someone mention the probiotics. I have started taking Culterelle and I've noticed that my stomach does not hurt as much all the time and now that I think about it, I don't think I've had as much gas as I used to. Such a relief.

I had horrible stools and very foul gas for the majority of my life! And then, seriously, one day it just stopped. This was way before I started taking Probiotics and before I switched from Ultrase to Creon enzymes. I have never been able to figure out what made it cease!

Interesting. Our almost 8yo dd used to take Ultrase and had lots of very smelly gas. We switched to Creon several years ago. She has not had much stinky gas for several years. I had never correlated it with the switch to Creon but now I see a couple of others seem to have the same results. I wonder if Creon is somehow better then Ultrase in this respect?

Not to sound peculiar but some people who see acupuncturists will at some point (my wife and I after our 3rd session - we had a total of 10) give a handout related to foods to avoid and those to eat. Just by mostly avoiding foods mentioned on the list, our gas 90% diminished. In fact, the acupuncturist Dr could not have known some of the foods I noticed I was "sensitive" to (some might say mild allergy) were in his avoid list. It is posted on our refrigerator door. Just a thought if anyone is contemplating seeing one for pain, the diet counseling may be even more helpful.
Just a thought.

I would agree with the above posts. I had terrible TERRIBLE gas throughout my entire life until a year ago when I finally switched from Ultrase enzymes to Creon enzymes. Now, I rarely get it. I can go weeks without getting it and it's one of the best changes in the world. It would always be very embarrassing when I was at school or work and get that bloated, terrible feeling. It was almost every day with the Ultrase. I had never connected it until reading the above posts, but it is 100% right on the dot. I would see what enzymes he is taking and perhaps consult with his CF doctor about changing them. Also, congrats to him on his 100% PFts..many of us would LOVE to have those!

There's a good chance his enzyme or maybe dosing needs to be increased. I increased my enzyme intake over 20 years or so and now am way over the recommended dose limit, but it works for me. Any less and I have problems. He should talk to his doc or a GI specialist about it. Were his surgeries more GI based? Sounds like his lungs are pretty healthy.

We do have stinky farts, but I believe foods can also play a role. I actually stopped eating mammals about 12 years ago, then cut out poultry 10 years ago. I notice when I'm in the shared office bathroom I'll hear some "normal" dudes sitting on the bowel making all kinds of explosive gaseous noises. I don't usually have that issue often, unusual given my enzyme needs. I think our bodies can digest foods easier than other foods, while calorie intake is important, I also think it's important to have a well-balanced diet even more-so than non-CF people. And beef and beef-jerky 3-times a day does not sound like something a GI system handles easily. He's probably not absorbing a large amount of the calories he takes in. He should be talking to his clinic dietician if he has one.
