Daughter Exposed to TONS of dry dirt in the air camping

Hi. Not sure if I am acting like a proactive parent or a nut job, but....
We went camping with another family this weekend. The campsite was SUPER dusty. When the children were running around, they were kicking up so much dirt (so dry it was powdery) that it would hover in the air.
Needless to say that through this and the hiking, DD breathed in a TON of dirt. I was trying to let her live life (she loves the kids that were camping with us), but I wanted to pull her out of there as fast as possible.
My question is, did we just totally blow it? Sigh<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">
Thanks,
Edan

hi edan, we had a visit from cf team last thuesday and I talked to them about this cause we are going for the whole summer to a place where there is also lots f dust and also in context of our little garden outside our home which gets alot of moisture sometimes and there are plans for building our raod - now it's dust and some concrete blocks. I was told that to wash hands and not to worry so much about pseudomonas (or other bacteria) comming from the envirment as it's can be handled easily. However I do not feel comfortable with Asia breathing in too much dust also.

I grew up in a fairly dry environment with alot of dust. Dry vs wet seems as far as humidity seems to only effect how thin the mucus is. IE wet easier to bring up, dry it tends to be a bit harder. Unless your dealing with dust levels that are on par with say.. wood shops. If your dealing with dust levels that high then I would suggest a mask and limiting exposure. Odds are with camping/hiking your not going to hit dust levels anywhere near that level.

Dust exposure (via riding rings/horses) has always been a serious problem for me. It definitely worsens my asthma and greatly increases the frequency of exacerbations when I'm exposed. I wouldnt worry so much about PA, but the simple particulate matter being deposited in the lungs is not good for anyone, especially a CFer.

Years ago, long before DS, I'd gone to a cave at a State Park. Took a tour and it was a dry cave, was sooooo dusty, that for a couple days afterwards, I was blowing dirt out of my nose. My dad ended up with a sinus infection. So knowing what you know now... If it happens again, IMO, do sinus rinses, wear a mask, make your excuses and leave... Depending upon the situation...

hi, I wouldn' worry about the ps., but the dust can really play havoc. My grandson was catching at a baseball game and it was very dusty, was sick for a week. The dust really did him in.

Hi everyone. Thanks for your replies. I will take them to heart and let you know if anything "happens". So far, so good.

I go camping several times each summer and to combat the dust and smoke I inhale inadvertently, I do an extra vest treatment or two when I can squeeze them in for about a week. It's worked pretty well for me the past several years.

Looking back at what I did as a kid I cringe, surprised I made it through.
If she is only exposed once in awhile she should be ok. I also rinse with saline and do a breather of just saline 3% to keep things moist and moving. You could always say it is too dusty for you and take the heat off, I know my wife doest that for me and says the dust is too much for her as well.
I dont go camping anymore for the dust reason it just is too much to fret about and the dryness etc.
