daughter is sick

Hi, my 8 year old has had a constant cough since thursday, started running 100-101 fever, and looking horrible. I took her to the ped and they tested for strep which was negative. I called her pulmo and she put her on steriod for 5 days. Saturday morning she was coughing constantly and her peak flow stayed in the yellow even after given albuterol several times. We went to er and they did chest xray which showed no pnuemonia. We had another bad night last night, she was coughing with every breath, making tears run down her face. She was having a very hard time breathing. There is so much congestion in her nose. I gave her cough syrup around 4 a.m. and she finally fell asleep and the cough eased up. This morning her cough is not as bad but her breathing is fast and she is still very congested, running a fever, and she cant sit up because her stomach is so sore from coughing. She hasnt had anything to eat since yesterday but she is drinking fine. I called her pulmo again last night and he said to give the steroids time to kick in. I feel like this is not asthma. She isn't wheezing. I just dont feel like they are doing enough. I feel so helpless when she is sitting there coughing her lungs up and crying it hurts so bad. I hate this! I beat her back as much as she would let me but that didn't seem to help any. Sorry for going on and on, just want to know if any of you that have asthma experience this, or is this cf related? Thanks so much!

My daughter does not have asthma but she does have ALOT of inflammation due to her CF, she is also 8 years old. The fever and cough would concern me. Did they swab your daughter for influenza? Does your daughter culture anything on a regular basis? Did the CF doc put her on any antibiotics?

When kids with CF get a virus or fever it can stimulate CF bacteria to flourish which is why it is very different when a CF'er gets a virus vs a non CFer.

When my daughter is sick(we just went through this) We do her Albuterol every 4 hours with VEST after every 4 hours. She also does Hypersal, pulmicort, pulmozyme and recently TOBI. Push fluids like crazy, with a fever she needs all the fluids she can get, even gatorade. We do not use cough syrup because we don't want to suppress her cough.

Does the CF doc realize your daughter is running a fever?

The fever concerns me. I'm surprised they didn't test for the flu. I'd get her swabbed if it were me. Tamiflu can make a huge difference if that's what is going on.

I hope your daughter feels better very soon. It is so hard to watch them struggle to breathe.

Thanks for the replies! Sorry it has taken me so long. We have had a rough month! She has been on orapred twice and finally right now seems better. I just dont feel like what she is going through is asthma. But, I guess I have to trust the docs. But I will still continue to be the annoying mama who calls everytime she gets sick too
