Deaccessing a Port

The surgeon/nurse should have given you that information as each port is different depending. I use prefilled syringes 5mls of 100 units per mil. I also have my accessed every month. My first port clotted off from I believe improper heparin use at one time. I am a freak about the heparin before de-accessing.

I know we talked about this last night, but I also use 10 ml saline, followed by 5 ml Heparin. I get mine flushed every 4-6 weeks.

Speaking of Heparin, do you guys know what that stuff actually is? Porcine intestinal mucosa!!! Slime from pig intestines?? YUCK!!! Makes me wonder, how did they even think to try that for preventing blood clots?! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">
