Delayed Vaccination Schedule

I realize most of the immunizations being recommended to my soon to be child are important. Nearly all of them are required for kindergarten. I just don't feel it's necessary to bombard the little guy in the first months of his life with these vaccines. He will not be in a daycare setting but we do live in an urban environment. I want to minimize the chances of having a special needs child (autism, etc.).

Can any of you suggest a delayed schedule that you researched and have either completed or are in the process of completing with your child?

Have any of you had the MMR seperated? How hard was it to get this and did you end up having to pay for it?

I realize your child has cf which my child won't (***knocks on wood***) but we are in similar circumstances because I have cf so we'll want our child as healthy as possible for his benefit but largely for my benefit as well.

I can't really help you 'cuz DS had all his vaccinations, as per the recommended schedule at the peds clinic. I think Foody might know though.

Hi Lauren,

I know this is a touchy topic with some parents. I did not delay any of my kids vaccinations, nor did I seperate the MMR. I did a great deal of reading and do not believe there is any connection between vaccinations and autism. My geneticist at the CF center (who has an autistic son) said that there is a good deal of support that autism (and all spectrum disorders, and possibly add/adhd) have a genetic link.

That said, I'm pretty confident that my doctor would have supported my decision to spread out the vaccines a bit or to seperate the MMR. If you have a doctor that won't support that decision (and thus make it work with your insurance), you've picked the wrong pediatrician. You'll probably be seeing more of the pediatrician in that first year than you will see your CF docs (let's hope!!), so having someone who listens to what you want is crucial.

Have you checked on some of the parenting boards? (babyzone.com; ivillage; or babycenter to name a few) I think they all have specific boards for immunization discussions and I'm sure someone on them will have a good timeline for delaying them. Of course you are also likely to run into some who will try to convince you to not immunize at all.

Good luck!! And good for you thinking about this ahead of time!! Planning is a wonderful trait for a parent!!

You are very wise to do your research now. We did not vaccinate after researching and self-study. I would recommend reading Vaccines: Are They Really Safe and Effective by Neil Miller. http://www.amazon.com/Vaccines...&qid=1125070318&sr=8-1 It goes one by one and details the history of the disease, the true dangers of contracting the disease, the efficacy of vaccination, ect. It is estimated that a very small percentage of people who are vaccinated actually gain any protection/immunity. This is why even if you vaccinate fro RSV or whooping cough, there is a good chance they will still get it. They may say it will be more mild but the scientific data does not show support this theory. Several of the vaccines, like hepB, are do not even make sense for an infant.

They are not required for kindergarten and you can opt out. You have to know your rights and your state's options for exemption. You as the consumer of health care can demand the separation of vaccinations if you choose to do only a select few and you can determine when (after the first year is recommended so the mylelin sheath can develop). While you can supposedly ask for thermisol (mercury) free vaccines you will have to accept the remaining ingredients.

I work with autistic children and have a close friend whose son absolutely was affected by his vaccination (not all autism can be attributed to vaccination of course). He had a severe reaction (seizure) after his 2nd or 3rd round and that was it. They don't need the medical community to agree with them, they know it was that moment and will never forget it.

You are wise to consider your option and be an informed consumer. Your son deserves that...hats off.

I would like to add that the best way to build healthy immune systems in a human baby is human milk. It is so important to give this gift to your child and it will last a lifetime. If you need any information about CF and breastfeeding I am happy to help...just PM me.

MMR is currently not recommended until at least 12 months of age. Vice when we were growing up and it was one of the first vaccines you recieved.

Other than that, i don't know anything about a delayed schedule based on studies regarding autism. I'll let you know if I find anything though. There's been talk about it on the triplet website I belong to so I'll look around.

We have not vaccinated any of our children since 1990. Until Zoe was diagnosed. Her pediatrician and I worked out a very slow, one at a time, schedule for a few of the vaccines that we felt she might be exposed to at the large children's clinic she goes to so often & the hospital. We didn't start them until she was 18 months old and like I said, we have only done a few that we felt would be extremely detrimental to her with her cf. So, to answer your question, yes, you can set up any type of schedule you want. Like someone else said, if your doc. doesn't want to work with you on this issue, you might need to find a new doc. As far as the school system goes, just like Foody said, most states have an exemption law. I keep a typed letter in my file on all my children for being vaccine exempt.
They are you children, you have every right to do what you want with their vaccines.

Good luck!!
