Dental problems caused by cf?

I have always had trouble with teeth. I was told that
<br /> the enamel was soft due to many abx over the years along
<br /> with Nebs and Infections them selfs.

<br /> I have had all fillings replaced at least 3 times.
<br />
<br /> I still have most of them. I Rinse a lot during the day.
<br />
<br /> I can't even remember how many Fluoride treatments I have
<br /> had to try and keep enamel hard.
<br />

I have never been told that my dental issues are related to CF, but geez...I'm 46.I'm missing two teeth and I've had 3 root canals and major reconstruction (crowns and bridges) I'm still having issues and can't chew on my left side. When I saw the endodontist this summer he said, "wow, you have had a lot of work done." Go figure. It's cost a fortune and no dental insurance. The CF foundation won't cover it and neither will the state. So my biggest issue these days, aside from the CF is my dentist bill. I spent over $2000 this year alone. I really wish the problem could be linked and we could get support through our CF center. Hey...if you can't eat, you can't be healthy.

lets see I have a bridge, 6-7 root canals, a place where I am supposed to have an implant but havent dont it yet, and I believe I have 2 teeth left without a filling...maybe.

I definately think it is related. Additionally, at least for me, I was raised on well water, no flouride and never given the supplemental vitamin you should take if you live in a fluoride free area (not all towns fluoridate either).


Studies have shown that certain bacteria that collinize your mouth are more associated with cavities. I think that we are more likely to have alot of bacteria colonizing capability.

Use of antibiotic nebs, heavy of oral/IV antibiotics, poor nutrition/failure to thrive, pH imbalances, acid reflux. I think we are prime candidates for bad teeth.

I have a messed up front tooth. I broke it doing a neb (for real). It had to be removed and needs an impant.
The first implant did not take due to low bone density and lack of growth. This is due to CFRD and osteopenia I would think. So waiting for a bone graft and a second implant.
I have had osteopenia for 20 years or so and i have been able to keep it at bay but we'll see.

I think nearly all of us have antibiotic stains.... and I SWEAR after my last round of IVs (can't remember the 2 new drugs it was) within a week of stopping my teeth turned BROWN in places. Of course my pharmacist sister said that wasn't a side-affect but it appeared within 1 stinking week! Still hasn't gone away completely and it's been almost a year...

I have been dying to rant about the rotton teeth my parents gave me. From younger than I remember I have been brushing, flossing, swishing and I thought everybody had teeth cleaned four times per year. I redefined the Catch 22 of rotten teeth, accusations of neglect.

A childhood friend is an esophogeal cancer survivor. Before his surgery, which included removal of all salivary glands, his doc recommended having his teeth pulled. Utterly shocked he asked why. Without amylase, which really fights dental bacteria, his teeth would rot in no time. He opted for a fortune in crowns. CF and all the oral legions of enamel enemies, reflux, nebulizing, and my favorites, fentanyl suckers loaded with sugar. Sugar in the quantities I took destroyed what remained of my teeth. My dentist is finally up on CF and as long as I hide my teeth under my mustache, he has given me functional dentition. If Albuterol stains, meet fentanyl. Look up pictures of methadone mouth. Meth mouth now refers to methanphetamine, and though equally gross. The treatment of choice for heroin in the form of syrup or candy laced with methadone and it, like fentanyl, a narcotic I must take as pancreatic autodigestion is described by experts as intractable pain impossible to fully mitigate. Other rotten toothed CFers please speak up. It is for certain everything from malnutrition to low salivary amylase, meds, reflux to who knows what.

I have an extreme case of bad teeth, and most of it is genetic. I have an underbite, that requires surgery, i have lost three of my front teeth, the first one when i was about 12 years old and the last two just recently after i got braces. I was also seen by an oral surgeon that said that my lower gums are receding and that eventually my bottom teeth will fall out because the gum is barely there to support them, so i need surgery for that too. Overall my teeth are horrible and i have always had to deal with them, since i was little. It was hard growing up with missing teeth in highschool and basically all throughout school. But i was recently supposed to be planning to get jaw surgery in order for me to fix my underbite so that i do not lose all of my teeth by the time i am 30 but i recently found out i am 6 weeks pregnant, so i have to put it on hold for awhile. :/ but i am planning to get the surgery after i have my baby. It is vital that i do if i want to keep the teeth i have left.

I have had my wisdom teeth removed (they were crooked and I even had a supernumer) and have early stages of paradontal disease, mainly because of inhalation treatments and mucus coming up and me not getting a chance to spit it out whenever it comes up, so it retreats

Also what I hate about having CF is two things - 1) Your saliva glands are always active never stopping, and 2) Anytime you brush, it seems that you automatically swallow the toothpaste because your mouth is always in "intake mode"

Shoot i got 20 teeth left and half of them are bad, constant pain and infections in my mouth makes me wanna scream! ive had like 6 teeth pulled due to infection in my face where its swollen up and it felt like someone smacking me in the face with a hammer. I told my dentist with my medicine they migh as well pull them all and give me dentures, i hate to do that but it doesn't make any sense to allow my teeth to continue to deteriorate and get infections with having cf. Am i wrong, i don't know.
