diabetes testing

I just was tested for diabetes even though I am asymptomatic as well. The glucola drink made me extremely nauseous so that would be my only concern for your daughter.

This was my first time ever being tested for CF related diabetes and I am 27 (well I was tested when I was pregnant but it was not related to CF) so I do not think it would hurt to wait to start being tested since she has no symptoms. However, your doctor is the best one to decide that.

They'll probably just do what's called a HA1c test (just a blood draw that measures how much sugar "sticks" to the blood cells) and not the Oral Glucose Tolerance Test aka OGTT.

I think it is pretty unusual for a 5yo to have CFRD.

Our primary physician and the Diabetes doctor at the children's hospital thought our dd had diabetes because when her urine was tested for a possible bladder infection, it came back with high blood sugar. We went through hospitilization and lots of finger pricks before it was determined that she didn't have diabetes. We should have talked to her CF doctor. He said right away - "of course she doesn't have diabetes. It was just a reaction to the infection... but she will likely have CFRD when she's older."

Bottom line - Can they just do a Urine test?

It is CFF recommended practice to do an annual test for diabetes since it is so common for those with CF. Your doctor is probably just following CFF guidelines. It probably would not hurt to wait another year since there are no symptoms. I would discuss this with your CF doctor to be sure though.
