Does your sister have CF?

CF related diabetes can have an big impact on lung function, so if there's a possibility he has it, it's important to get him diagnosed.

take care.

HI

My son is 12 and has recently been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as well as having cf. It is not cf related. I have been trying to find other people with cf and diabetes, there arent that many!

Anyhow, we were gutted (and still are I guess but are trying to deal with it) when we found out in December our son had diabetes...there was no history in either of our families. He is now insulin dependent, but is doing a lot better now then what he was. He has gained a lot of weight and hasnt had any problems with regard to his cf as yet.

If your son has diabetes you're better off knowing and dealing with it asap. The fact that my son doesnt have cfrd but type 1 is actually a good thing (according to the specialist), because it means that the impact of cf on his body is not as advanced as it would be with cfrd (caused by insulin resistance or depleted body organ functions).

The good thing is how incredibly he has adjusted to the situation, he's amazing. I hope you son does not have diabetes.

My sister was born in 1976 with CF she passed away in Dec of 1990.

I still have a hard time comparing my son to my sister even though things have change over 25 years. The thing they used to do to the kids back then was awful. The disease was still new then. My mother told me you're lucky back when my sister was born life expectancy was about 3 years old.
Okay,
Alex has been testing everyday his sugar never goes past 131 guess that's good. In the morning it's 85 to 115.

Yes, I am aware of diabetes and Cf.
Thanks
Sue

What did they used to do back then to CFer's that was so awful?

I was diagnosed only 4 years after your sister was born and I can't imagine the treatment I got was much different than her.

I'm curious as to what you're referring to.....

Life expectancy in 1976 was around 16, actually. It was around 3 years old back in the 50s.
