Gosh, Juliet, you sound alot like me! My biggest downfalls are my morning "real" chai tea lattes (with a whole grain muffin!) and my evening snack bug! The only way I lose any weight is by substituting veggies (raw veggies) for my snacks, and no sugar added Chai tea lattes. However, with the lovely CFRD, I do "need" to have a real one every once in a while (my sugar fix of choice, of course, haha). I did decide this week to cut out my am cereal, and just have milk and yogurt, since I have a pm cereal with my evening meds anyways. We'll see- I need to lose at least 8 lbs., and no objections from my cf drs with my dieting plans- ever .

You certainly aren't alone! </end quote>

Oh no And.....looks like this ugly topic for us has reared its head Maybe it is time for us to get in the game again.

Welshwitch...You are not alone in the weight department. I am about your same height and weight. I have been trying to just lose a few and stabilize what seems to be an out of control appetite. Good suggestions from my fellow CFers: trailmix, frozen grapes, trying not to eat after dinner, healthy fatty foods. I am right where I was a few months ago though, ughh! We all feel for you though.

For three years or so, I was consistently about 245 pounds. I'm 5'8" tall, so that's not quite as bad as it might sound. But at one time I was around size 22-24 as well. I have never been able to successfully diet by counting calories or depriving myself. I always gained it all back in short order. I always felt like I was "starving" and then one day I would start eating like crazy until I stopped feeling like I was "starving" and, voila, every ounce was back. I haven't weighed myself in over 2 years, but I am now buying clothes in sizes medium/large/extra large (depending upon the item) instead of 1X/2X/3X.

Here are some of the things I have done/am doing:

1) I take a lot of vitamins and supplements. I believe you will continue to have cravings as long as you have a nutrient deficiency of some sort. For example, I have heard that chocolate cravings can indicate a magnesium defiency because chocolate is high in magnesium.

2) I take a lot of herbs and do a lot of hot and cold treatments to kill off the infections I used to carry. I believe that as long as you are overrun with infection, you will crave food because the infections are feeding on you.

3) I avoid yeast breads and other foods that promote yeast in the body. I have worked hard to get yeast under control generally. It has helped me (and my son wcf) get off digestive enzymes and I am not as hungry as I used to be. Yeast is a living organism. It will live in your gut and live on some of the stuff you eat. I have heard this from other folks too who don't have CF -- that being hungry all the time can be a sign of yeast overgrowth.

4) Get my PH balance under control, in part because it helps get infection under control.

5) I don't count calories at all, don't own a scale, don't know how much I weigh. I have lost multiple dress sizes by learning more about the chemistry of food and eating foods that help me be healthier and avoiding foods that are a problem. For example, I eat organic coconut oil and organic butter but I avoid canola oil, peanut oil and soybean oil. I recently added olive oil back into my diet in small amounts. Good oils help me heal and bad oils keep me ill. I pay no attention whatsoever to how many calories are in them, just whether the chemistry is right for me.

HTH.

I currently take:
Vitamin A
Vitamin E
Liquid B complex with extra B-12
Folic Acid (this is another b vitamin)
PABA (this is another b vitamin)
Iron
Calcium (separate from the iron by at least 2 hours)
Magnesium
Co-q-10 (about 12 hours before bedtime or it can interfere with your sleep)
Olive leaf extract (this is a broad spectrum herbal antibiotic and anti-viral)
Oil of oregano (this is a good antibiotic and anti-fungal)
Carnitine (to help me properly absorb the folic acid)

I am currently out of Wild Yam extract. It is on order and I got the email earlier today that it shipped today. It's good for adrenal support, which I find I need any time I am under stress or fighting some bug. I am currently working overtime any time it is offered because I need the money, so I need all the support I can get to do that.

I take a plate-full of stuff in the evening before bedtime (right now, actually, ). And then I usually take my co-q-10 and iron in the morning. If I need more b vitamins, I will take more at that time. If I am under the weather, I may also take more olive leaf or oil of oregano at that time so I am well enough to go to work.

There are a few recipes on my website and some information on PH balance and if you check the "blog" (a yahoo group), there are some older posts with some info about supplements I was taking at various points in the past. Health Gazelle

Good luck with this.

EDIT:
I am also taking Aloe Vera and Glyconutrients (Ambrotose). I may have overlooked a few other things. If I think of anything else, I will let you know.
