Dirty nebulizer

Hi, one of my sons has CF. He is 21 and last night looking at his nebulizer I realized that the water in it was all full of fungi... I m not positive whether its fungi or not but its totally dirty, its full of white little thingies down at the bottom of his nebulizer compressor...
When he was younger i would take care of all his meds etc but after he went to college at age 18 he became totally independent in his care. I just didnt know he wasnt cleaning the thing (even though he uses it everyday !!!)

Does anybody know whether its fungi and what would happen if he keeps using it being that dirty? (although the medicine doesnt get mixed with that water, it goes in the little cup).

I am far from good about keeping me nebs cup sterile, but this is over the top. It must be cleaned & sterilized if not totally replaced immediately.

Lord only knows what if anything he has infected/reinfected himself with.......

Yikes! As an environmental scientist who happens to have CF, nothing worries me more than to hear of a fellow CFer exposing himself to unhealthy things like molds and fungi. It is completely unacceptable and a HUGE health risk to use a compressor and nebulizer that is so incredibly filthy. I'm confused though as to the water you're mentioning. I've never heard of a nebulizer/compressor system that needs water in it. Are you sure you're not talking about a humidifier?

There's a chance that the "white thingies" are calcium deposits that are left behind as the water evaporates. Does it look crusty?

It sounds like the compressor/nebulizer is BEYOND hope for being cleaned. I suggest you get in touch with your doctor right away and get a prescription for a new one.

We are currently living in Spain, and the nebulizer our son has is called "PIC INDOLOR NEW PROJET". It does require that we fill it up with water and then put the cup with the meds inside (on a kind of cupholder).

I am attaching a pic of the nebulizer.

By the way, I talked to his doctor and tomorrow at his clinic they will give us a new one (social security pays for it).

I tried cleaning it but I would feel more comfortable getting him a new one.

By the way, answering lightNlife's question, no it does not look crusty, they are soft looking particles, I really have no clue as to what they are.
