Disability

I ahve been on disability since March of 2006. My CF doc has wanted me to quit working and go on disability since I was about 19 and I told him that I felt too healthy to do that so I continued to work. I was told in November 2004 that I needed double lung and liver transplants and still continued to work....I needed a life. I began evaluations for the transplants in June 2005, had some more in July, and then found out that I was pregnant on July 31, 2005. I continued to work until September and then had to leave work and go on short term disability. I totally thought I would go back after I had the baby but that just didn't happen. I applied for SSD in March 2006 (completely on the Internet....never had to go into the office) and was approved in April. I got the double lung and liver transplants in January 2007 and have not returned to work due to being on immunosupressants and having another 4 surgeries after the transplants. I had to have my colon removed in June 2007 and have had 2 or 3 reconstructive surgeries since. My docs don't want me to go back until after Brady starts Kindergarten....too many germs in Daycare for Brady to bring home to me.

Anyway, that's why I went on disability and why I am still on it. You can go to SSA.gov and find all of the answers that you want there. I know that one of the qualifying factors is an FEV1 1.5 or lower (I think). If you have an FEV1 that low, then you definitely qualify (if you have worked for the time period that they require). If your FEV1 is not that low, then there are other factors that they go by. I did EVERYTHING for it on the Internet....I have never stepped foot in the SSD department. Make sure that you can get records from all of the doctors that you have ever gone to and have them sent in to disability. If you apply and they ask you to see one of their docs for certain tests.....request for your own doc to do them (but only if your CF doc is on track with you about going on disability). If your own doc does not want you to go on disability, then take your chances going to see their doctor.

This is what I know from my experiences. If you have any questions, you can ask and I will try to answer.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I have read the SSA website, and I am pretty sure I would qualify. Constantly culturing pseudo, on IVs twice since Jan, need them again soon and on Tobi. When I haven't been on IVs, I have been on orals most of the time. When I am sick (most of the time) I definitely qualify with their requirement for FEV1, but not during those two weeks when I am feeling well right after IVs.

I am stuck with the personal choice. But I just don't know if I am ready to stop working. If I could find a part time job and be able to afford to live, then I would be golden. But I can't find a job that would pay that much. What do people do when they are stuck in between?
